Clouds In Oil, Next At SCAN

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown will host Charles Ray of Redding as the guest artist at its next open meeting. Mr Ray will be painting in oil at the meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 26, at 1:30 pm. His subject will be clouds.

The demonstration will take place in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). Non-members are invited, free of charge.

Mr Ray’s current work focuses on images in nature painted primarily on site in the Northeast – landscapes of serene clouds, rolling shadowed hills or bodies of water. Themes include sunrises and sunsets.

The artist says he derives energy from the sunrise – getting a whole new start every day. Prior to his shift to landscape, his paintings were created in the studio and were mostly figurative or still life.

Charles Ray retired a few years ago as the director at Silvermine School of the Arts in New Canaan, a position he held since 1993. In addition he taught painting and drawing at Silvermine School for many years and is a Silvermine Guild Artist member. Mr Ray graduated from the Hartford Art School and also studied at Yale School of Art.

Charles Ray has had numerous one-person shows and has been in group and museum shows throughout Connecticut, New York and neighboring states. In addition he has been commissioned for many corporate and private portraits. Presently he is teaching at Rowayton Arts Center.
