[After winning its first two games and capturing the Nike Carolina Classic title, the Wake Forest men’s soccer team was tabbed as the No. 1 team in the country by NSCAA and Soccer America. The Deacons nipped Old Dominion, 2-1, in overtime before blanking Monmouth, 2-0, but Marcus Tracy (NHS, ’06) has yet to score – though he does have two shots on net.

[After a split at the Denver Invitational Tournament in early September and a loss to Seton Hall last week, the Fairfield University women’s soccer team opened the new campaign at 1-1-1. Sophomore striker Casey Frobey (NHS, ’06) notched a goal in a season-opening 2-0 win over Air Force.

[It has been a slow start for the Manhattan College women’s soccer team, with losses to American University (4-1) and Georgetown (1-0) and a draw with the University of Albany (1-1) to open the season. Alex Konneker (NHS, ’06) has started all three games but has yet to score.

[A convincing, 5-0, season-opening win over Staten Island has the Monclair State men’s soccer team on the right path in its defense of the New Jersey Athletic Conference title earned last year. The Red Hawks were 20-1-1 a year ago and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Defender Brian Miles (NHS, ’06) started, but did not register a point.

[The Colby-Sawyer women’s tennis team pounded Plymouth State, 8-1, as freshman Lauren DeFelice (NHS, ’07) teamed with sophomore Mary Francis for a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles.

[After a 2-0 loss to Ithaca in the opening round of the Player’s Cup, the Gettysburg College women’s soccer team rebounded with a 2-0 win over Mary Washington. Tara Gaston (NHS, ’06) has started both games.

[Brian Conroy (NHS. ‘07) has appeared in one game for the Gettysburg College men’s soccer team, which has opened the season at 2-1-0 with wins over Eastern University (1-0) and Wesley (2-0).

[Mike Vontobel (NHS, ‘07) appeared in his first collegiate game, a 5-0 win over Staten Island by the Montclair State University men’s soccer team.

[The Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team continues to struggle as it dropped its first five matches of the 2007 season. The Lady Bobcats were 1-30 a year ago. This year, senior Stephanie Logan has appeared in all five matches and all 16 games while registering 25 kills and a team-high five service aces. She also has five blocks and seven digs.

[Freshman midfielder/defender Meredith Palo (Canterbury School, ’07) started both games for the United States Coast Guard Academy women’s soccer team, which was beaten 1-0 by Lasell in double overtime and 2-0 by Eastern Connecticut State University.

[Freshman middie Katie Datin (NHS, ’07) has appeared in two games – starting one – for the Franklin & Marshall University field hockey team, which opened the season at 2-0-0 with identical 2-1 wins over Alvernia and Elizabethtown.

[Michael Klein (NHS, ’07) has appeared in one game for the Roger Williams University men’s soccer team, which opened the season with shutout losses to Utica College, Cabrini College and Rhode Island College.

[The University of Missouri at Rolla men’s soccer team has gotten off to a nice start with wins over Ashland (2-0), Missouri Southern (3-0) and Northeastern State (1-0). Junior Nick Mentessana (NHS, ’05) has appeared in two games.

[Sophomore Brennan Coakley (NHS, ’06) got on the field for the first time as the Penn State football team crushed Florida International, 59-0, to open the 2007 season.
