Food Bank Needs Help

NEW HAVEN — The Connecticut Food Bank needs volunteers to staff the fifth annual Check-Out Hunger campaign, which will kick off at A&P/Food Emporium, Grand Union, and ShopRite stores throughout Connecticut on October 1.

Check Out Hunger raises funds for the Connecticut Food Bank (CFB) and America’s Second Harvest food banks in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Last year participating Connecticut stores raised more than $34,000 for the Connecticut Food Bank. Total donations to America’s Second Harvest food banks for the five-state area reached almost $1 million in 1999. All money raised by the campaign goes directly to the participating food banks.

Volunteers are still needed for stores in Fairfield, Litchfield, New Haven, and New London counties September through November. Tasks include setting up store displays, encouraging store staff, and overseeing the progress of the Check-Out Hunger campaign in the chosen store.

Interested volunteers should contact Ed Greenbaum, volunteer coordinator, Connecticut Food Bank, at 203/469-5000.

Connecticut Food Bank provides donated food to soup kitchens, food pantries, domestic violence shelters, adult and children’s day centers, and residential programs. In 1999 CFB distributed 7.3 million pounds of food to more than 500 feeding programs in Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham counties.

The CFB offices and its primary warehouses are in East Haven; additional distribution centers are located in Waterbury and Fairfield. More information is available on CFB’s Web site, www.ctfoodbank.org.
