Rocking Roosters Offering Open House Events
Area residents are invited to accept the challenge on two Wednesday evenings â September 17 and 24,both beginning at 8 pm â the Rocking Roosters Square Dance Club will hold an open house at Newtownâs Sand Hill Plaza. Dancing will be indoors at the air-conditioned gazebo/inner mall area.
âJudging from the spectator response we received along the Newtown Labor Day Parade route, we are hoping for a good attendance,â says longtime club member Marty Maciag. âThe Roosters are 42 years old this fall and have marched in every Labor Day parade. A lot of people shouted out âdance! dance!â
âAnyone can square dance. It looks like fun, because it is! If you can walk, you can dance,â he promises.
âOver the years we have heard everything from âmy parents, or my grandparents used to square danceâ and âOh, I did that in fourth grade, or gym classâ to âI donât know my left from my rightâ and âMy husband/boyfriend wonât do it.â These all have an element of truth but you can get up and dance if you truly want to,â says Mr Maciag.
Twice a month, on first and third Fridays, Rocking Roosters hold club level dances at the Edmond Town Hall gym. Attendance comes from all over the state, and the local group is hoping for new members year after year. Rocking Roosters would especially love to see some new local members.
âThis is a heart healthy, wonderful activity that keeps the mind and body alert while having a great time with lots of other people. Itâs great therapy physically, emotionally, and socially for everyone,â said Mr Maciag.
