Statue Stolen From Library Garden
Statue Stolen From Library Garden
The small statue of a boy reading a book that sat for nearly four years in the garden outside the Cyrenius H. Booth Library on Main Street has been stolen.
Police said they received a report September 10 from Library Director Janet Woycik that someone had stolen the concrete statue during the preceding weekend.
The statue, three teak benches and a trellis were donated to the library in late 1997 by the Garden Club of Newtown, Town and Country Garden Club, Horticulture Club of Newtown, the family and friends of Helen Davis Gill, and by Emanuel Raices in memory of his wife, Byrna Untermeyer Raices.
The statue was put in place by Robert Stokes, the husband of Booth Library Curator Caroline Stokes, in the reading garden where many people sit to read and enjoy the flowers. Valued at $100, the statue had been on Mrs Woycikâs âwish listâ for years after she saw one like it in Burmuda.
Eagle Scout Reid Warner installed a slightly different statue of a boy reading in the childrenâs garden.
Anyone who has any information about the stolen statue is urged to contact the Newtown police at 270-4255 or to return the statue, no questions asked.
