Scholarships Available At NHS
The following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information are available there. Teachers Against Prejudice (TAP) â beginning September 15, 2001 TAP will be conducting a statewide essay contest for all students in grades 6 through 12. There will be two categories, one for middle and one for high school students. The first place prize is a $100 U.S. Savings Bond; second place is a $50 U.S. Savings bond. The essay questions, judging criteria and more information can be found in the Career Center. The deadline is November 30, 2001. Please see Mrs McEvoy for any questions.
2001 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards/ National Association of Secondary School Principals â this is for high school students who have had an outstanding involvement in a volunteer community service activity after September, 2000. Newtown High School will select one student to go onto state level judging. The top volunteer in each state receives $1000 awards, trip to Washington, DC and silver medallions. Once in Washington, the top ten will win an additional $5000. Deadline for the applications to be in the Career Center is October 26, 2001.
2001/2002 Principalâs Leadership Award â This award is for High School Seniors who are in the top 20% of their class and who demonstrate leadership. This year the program will award 150 scholarships of $1,000 each. Only one student from Newtown High School may be nominated. Applications and instructions are in the Career Center. All applications are due to Mrs. McEvoy by November 16, 2001.
Coca Cola Scholars Program â to recognize outstanding high school seniors. Recipients are not solely valedictorians but well- rounded individuals with highly developed interest in their community. They balance extracurricular activities with strong academic performances. Two-hundred fifty merit-based scholarships are awarded annually. Fifty are for $20,000. The remaining 200 are for $4,000. The coca cola scholars program is encouraging students to apply on-line at www.thecoca-colacompany.com. A limited number of applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline for the receipt of applications is October 31.
 Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) - The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts provides the opportunity for 17 and 18 year old artists to qualify to be chosen to participate in the ARTS Week. This program is available to artists developing their careers in Dance, Jazz, Film and Video, Music, Photography, Theater, Visual Arts, Voice and Writing. The students have the opportunity to earn cash awards up to $3000 each. Also there are three $25,000 scholarships that recognize and reward extraordinary talented students.
