89ERS
Â
Brian Reszoly â who scored a touchdown in a 14-6 win over Monroe last week â was a key player as the 89ers went to 2-0 on the season with a tough 7-6 win over the Danbury Vikings. Reszoly had some great runs and gained considerable yardage to lead the 89ers to the victory.
Jake DeVellis threw several great passes and was unstoppable up the middle as Newtownâs quarterback. DeVellis was also sharp on defense, where Kyle McNamara made perhaps the most important play of the game when he stopped Danbury on an extra-point attempt.
Mike Poeltl, Nick Tierno, Rob OâDonnell, Mike Hadgraft and Steve Oberstadt were all strong on defense. Ben Collins was a force, as was Timo Roehrs on the line. McNamara and Jamie Vavrek both had outstanding games on both sides of the ball.
While McNamaraâs hands gathered in three passes, it was Vavrek who charged the middle for the lone Newtown touchdown. DeVellis tossed a pass to McNamara for the extra point.
The Newtown offense took over in the fourth quarter, eating up all but 24 seconds of the clock to secure the victory. Tough work in the trenches was turned in by Chris Dennis, Jake Browning, Fletcher Travis, James Sharpe, Brendan Blawie, Rob Norling, CJ Portolese, David Hutchinson, and Kevin McCarthy.
Anthony Corleto had several tackles and strong performances came from Andrew Matsis and Dana Hansen.

JUNIOR PEE WEES
Â
Mark Scheunemann scampered 76 yards for the Newtown Junior Pee Weesâ only touchdown of the game, but it held up in a 7-7 tie with the Danbury Vikings this past weekend in Pop Warner football action.
After a big defensive series, Newtown was stuck with its back to the goal line on the seven yard line. Tyler Tarantino gave the Jr Pee Wees some breathing room, carrying the ball to the 24, and on the very next play â a reverse â Scheunemann gave Newtown the lead, 7-0, with his long touchdown run.
Scheunemann was spring by a nice block from Lucas Vendel.
Late in the game, Danbury recovered a Newtown fumble on the seven-yard-line and soon punched the ball into the end zone for the tying touchdown.
On the opening drive of the game, it looked as if the Jr Pee Wees were in complete command. On the legs of Tarantino, they pushed the ball down to the Danbury 17 â but were unable to move much further and had to turn the ball over.
The defense, though, came out storming with backfield tackles by Vendel, Chris Elias, Dan Curtis, and Dan DeLaVega and forced Danbury to punt. Newtown ran out of downs, though, and had to give the ball back to the Vikings.
The Vikings mounted a drive and despite the defense of Zach Conger, Brett Mauro, Sean Ryan, Tarantino and Vendel, managed to push the ball down to the Newtown 12. There, the Jr Pee Wee defense held with great plays from Ryan Manning, Conger and Michael Maher.
Newtown got the ball on its seven, then quickly scored on runs from Tarantino and Scheunemann.
Tarantino added the extra point.
Neither team could move the ball early in the second half. While Newtown fumbled the ball away on one possession, Kris Kling came up with an interception soon after. The Jr Pee Wees were stymied by the Danbury defense and the Jr Pee Wee defense, in turn, stymied Danbury.
The Vikings drove the ball down to the Newtown seven, but plays from James Post, Matt Taylor and Connor Martin shut the door again. Three plays later, however, Danbury recovered a Newtown fumble and was able to convert that into a touchdown.
Tom Jackman recovered a fumble to stop another Danbury drive late in the second half and the Newtown defense remained solid as, with no time left on the clock, Danbury attempted one final pass to try and win the game.
The Jr Pee Wees will host Aspetuck Saturday at 2 pm.
PEE WEES
Â
Steve Orrico, Tucker Kass, Brian Poeltl and Tom Hutchison combined for 171/2Â tackles as the Newtown defense shut the Danbury Vikings down, allowing just two first downs and 40 total yards, in a 19-0 shutout.
The Pee Wees scored on a Joe DeVellis interception (his second), which he ran back 50 yards, and a Drew Adamek fumble recovery (caused by Poeltl) which he took back 45 yards for the score. Kass later added a touchdown run of his own.
Cody Shpunt and Joe Collins made some great blocks, as did Hutch, who made the block that sprung Kass for his TD. Ryan McGrath tossed a short pass to David Modzelewski for the extra point on the final touchdown.
JUNIOR MIDGETS
Â
The Junior Midgets fought a tough battle and fell, 26-7, to Danbury.
In the first half, behind blocks from James Wiedemann and Matt Berquist, Carey Olsen was sprung on a 50-yard touchdown run. Jeff LeVasseur added the extra point and gave the Jr Midgets their only lead, 7-6.
Danbury scored a pair of touchdowns, but the extra points were stopped by the defensive moves of Billy Beatty and RJ Marus.
At the start of the second half, Mark Ingermann recovered an onside kick and Jordan Miles ran the ball well, but Newtown was unable to capitalize. Dylan Borst later made a fine quarterback sack, but Danbury scored a late touchdown.
MIDGETS
Â
In a 30-0 loss to the Danbury Vikings, the Midgets as a whole held together as a team. John Collins played a terrific game as quarterback. On defense, Derek Pattison made an interception in the first quarter and in the fourth quarter Bobby Pattison recovered a fumble.
