False ID

While conducting surveillance of town liquor stores, local officers observed Jake Thomas Behan, 19, arriving at the Rooster Wine & Liquor store at 113 South Main Street operating a vehicle without a front marker plate. They then observed Behan exiting the store with a 12-pack of beer and stopped him to investigate.

Police report he purchased the beer using a false ID, and he was then issued a misdemeanor summons for procurement of alcohol by a minor, and a violation for operating with no front plate.

Behan was scheduled to appear on the summons on September 17.

Wanted On Warrant

After learning there was a warrant for his arrest, Leonard D. Charron, 42, of Paugussett Road, Sandy Hook, turned himself in to police, where he was processed and charged with third degree assault, disorderly conduct, and second degree unlawful restraint.

He was subsequently released on a $2,500 bond and assigned a September 8 court date.

Honda Vs Honda

On August 28 at about 9 am Newtown Police responded to a reported minor collision at Church Hill and Walnut Tree Hill Roads. Upon arrival officers report that Rosalie Piperis, 87, of Elizabeth Circle had been operating her 2012 Honda Accord northbound on Walnut Tree Hill Road when she entered the intersection and made contact with a 2004 Honda Pilot being operated by Dana Totir of Sandy Hook.

Police found nobody was injured, and there was no damage to the Pilot and very minor damage to the Accord, and took no enforcement action against either operator.

 Fairfield Hills Trespass

Newtown Police were called to Fairfield Hills on August 29 at approximately 6 pm after receiving a report of someone inside Plymouth House.

Upon arrival officers located Rick Jordan, 22, of Lenor Drive in Shelton.

After a brief investigation, officers determined he had entered the building and issued him an infraction for simple trespass with a court appearance set for September 12.

Under Suspension

On August 30 at about 2:09 pm, Newtown police pulled over a vehicle on Sugar Street that was reportedly traveling at 55 miles per hour in a posted 40 mile per hour zone.

After a brief investigation, they arrested the operator, John Russell Chamrovich, 31, of Hayestown Road, Danbury, for operating under suspension, and traveling fast.

After processing at Newtown Police headquarters, the accused was released on a $2,000 nonsurety bond pending a September 9 court appearance.

Following Too Close

Police responded to the commuter lot on Wasserman Way September 2 at about 5:40 pm after receiving a report of a minor collision.

Upon arrival they determined that Kim J. Perreault, 52, of Simsbury was operating a 2004 Chrysler Seabring and was exiting the interstate when she made contact with the rear of a 2015 Honda Pilot being operated by Jamie Peterson of Hundred Acres Road. After a brief investigation, Perreault was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Rear Ender

On September 3 at 7:55 am, Newtown Police were called to the intersection of Berkshire and Pole Bridge Roads about a minor collision.

Upon arrival they determined that David Roller, Jr, of Kings Court was operating a 201 Toyota RAV 4 SUV westbound on Berkshire Road when he was struck from behind by a 2013 Honda Accord operated by Erika T, Ferraivolo, 24, of Wallingford. Seeing only a minor rear bumper scuff on the Toyota, officers issued Ferraivolo a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

St Rose Theft

Police are investigating a September 4 donation box theft from St Rose of Lima Church.

Warrant Arrest

After learning of a warrant for her arrest September 4, Renata Charran of Howes Court, Ridgefield, turned herself in to Newtown Police. She was charged with assault in the third degree, disorderly conduct, and fourth degree criminal mischief stemming from a June 22 physical altercation.

She was subsequently released on a $1,000 bond with a September 5 court date.

Parking Lot Incident

On September 5 at about 8:23 am, police responded to a report of a private property collision at 20 Commerce Road.

Upon arrival, officers determined that Douglas E. Brittingham, Jr, had backed a 2005 Ford Explorer into a parked 2003 Audi A4 owned by Melanie Bodetti of Newtown resulting in minor damage to both vehicles.

Brittingham received a written warning for unsafe backing.

Honda Into Guideposts

Police received a call about a single vehicle collision September 5 at about 9:56 am near 10 Mile Hill Road.

Upon arrival they determined that Amanda Moore, 33, of Appleblossom Lane was operating a 2011 Honda Odyssey eastbound when she reportedly veered off into a guardrail. The vehicle was towed from the scene and both occupants were examined by Newtown Ambulance volunteers because of an airbag deployment.

No injuries were sustained, however. Moore was charged with making a restricted turn.

Missing Sign

Sometime between September 5 and 8, a custom made Haley Lane street sign, stop sign and post were taken from the entrance to Walnut Tree Hill Village II.

Ford Into Pole

Newtown Police were summoned to a reported traffic collision September 5 at about 10:18 pm on Pole Bridge Road. Upon arrival they found a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup had collided with a utility pole causing sufficient damage that the vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

Following a brief investigation officers issued driver Jordan Gray, 18, a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Highway Arrest

State Police report that on September 6 at about 2:07 am, a trooper pulled over a vehicle being operated on Interstate 84 in Newtown by Danbury resident Mario Castro, 40, of Franklin Street.

After an investigation, Castro was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, failure to maintain a lane, and operating under suspension.

He was processed at Troop A in Southbury and released on a $500 cash bond with a September 23 court date in Danbury.

Evading Incident

On September 7 at about 1:06 am, State Police arrived at the scene of a reported collision near Exit 9 off Interstate 84 westbound.

Upon arrival troopers say they found an unoccupied 1992 Acura Legend had veered from the roadway and struck a metal guidewire on the shoulder.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and an investigation is ongoing, according to the report.

Under The Influence

On September 7 at about 2:18 am, State Police responded to a reported crash on Interstate 84 eastbound near Exit 9. Upon arrival, they discovered Gary William Winn, 65, of Horseshoe Ridge Road, Newtown, who was operating a 2003 Subaru Legacy, had veered off the travel portion of the roadway and struck a guardrail on the median. After a brief investigation, Winn was charged with operating under the influence, and failure to maintain a lane. He was later released on a $500 nonsurety bond and issued a September 23 court date in Danbury. The vehicle sustained damage to the extent that it had to be towed from the scene.

Guardrail Collision

State Police report that on September 7 at about 7:02 am, Warren Davis, 45, of Bedford, N.Y., was operating a 2010 Honda Civic eastbound on Interstate 84 in Newtown near Exit 11 when he reportedly left the travel lane and collided with a rope guiderail.

No injuries were reported. Davis was issued an infraction for failure to maintain a lane.

Canaan House Trespass

Police were dispatched to Fairfield Hills at about 7:45 pm on September 7 after a report of trespassing, and issued Benjamin J. Morales, 18, of Chapel Street, Norwalk, an infraction for simple trespass.

He was assigned a September 26 answer date on the infraction.

Lost Wallet

Police are looking for a wallet that was reported lost near the Big Y store on Queen Street around noontime September 7.

The wallet is the size of a checkbook, gray in color with a circle pattern.

Two-Car Crash

Newtown Police were called to the area of 60 Old Hawleyville Road September 8 at about 4:29 pm following a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, they found that Matthew Pruner, 20 of that address was attempting to exit the driveway in a 2002 Subaru Impreza, when police say he struck a passing 2009 Ford Econoline van operated by Joseph Schultz, 60, of Brookfield causing minor damage to both vehicles, but no reported injuries.

Following a brief investigation, Pruner was issued a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Written Warning

State Police were called to a minor crash on Interstate 84 eastbound near the Exit 11 on ramp on September 8 at about 7:41 pm. Upon arrival, troopers determined that David Kane of Trumbull was operating a 2005 Honda Accord, when a 2014 Jeep Wrangler attempted to merge into the occupied lane striking the Honda.

The Jeep operator, Stephen C. Miller of Harrisville, R.I., was found at fault and issued a written warning for failure to maintain a lane.

No injuries resulted, and both vehicles were drivable from the scene.

DUI Charge

At around 2:30 am on September 9, State Police pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 84 in Newtown, after receiving complaints that a red vehicle struck a metal guardrail near eastbound Exit 9.

Upon arrival at the scene, troopers arrested operator Roberto Carlos Mejia, 27 of Pardee Street, New Haven. After failing a field sobriety test, he was charged with driving under the influence, driving while under suspension, operating without minimum insurance, and failure to maintain a lane.

Mejia could not post a $500 surety bond, so he was held for arraignment later that morning in Danbury.

Altercation

Following a reported altercation, officers responding to a Beaver Dam Road residence September 10 at about 11:15 am, arrested Philip James Scappatura III, 46, and charged him with one count of disorderly conduct.

The accused was processed and subsequently released on a $2,000 bond and assigned a September 11 court date.

Newtown Police, Hook & Ladder and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members all responded to a two-vehicle collision with injuries reported September 9 at 5:57 pm at 65 Church Hill Road, just west of its intersection with Commerce Road. Upon arrival police determined that Constant Gregoire, 17, was in the eastbound lane operating a 2002 Land Rover when she collided with the rear of a 1999 Jeep Cherokee being operated by Viola Walberg, 54, of Brookfield. Following an investigation, Gregoire was issued a written warning for following too  close. Police also  issued Walberg a verbal warning for failure to carry an insurance card. Both vehicles sustained minor damage but were drivable from the scene. All involved were checked at the scene for injuries, but no one was transported to the hospital.
