Interesting Moments In Baseball History, Monday With Historical Society
With just a few games left in the regular Major League Baseball season, Newtown Historical Society will head for the virtual ballpark for its first program of the 2014-15 season.
Newtown resident Chris Spiro will present “Interesting Moments in Baseball History” in the community room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, on Monday, September 15, at 7:30 pm.
Mr Spiro has spent a lifetime as a fan, collector, and active follower of all things baseball. He has just recently completed a trek to visit all the major league ballparks currently in use, and for years he has been inviting players past and present to visit his home, garnering invitations to visit at their homes, and making appearances at shows where the players were appearing.
Among those whom Mr Spiro has hosted or been a guest of are Dom and Joe Dimaggio, Don Drysdale, Don “Perfect Game” Larson, Commissioner Happy Chandler, Stan Musial, Monte Irwin, Johnny Mize, Wade Boggs, Warren Spahn (who, in the days long before five-man pitching rotations, gave rise to the hope, “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain”), Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra, who have the unique distinction of each having the same number, 8, retired in their honor, and many other players and officials.
Mr Spiro will be reliving his many conversations with these old-time greats, modern players and others in his “Interesting Moments” presentation. He has also promised to bring a selection of memorabilia from his collection, and will even offer a quiz for those willing to test their baseball wits.
Chris Spiro has been a longtime resident of Newtown, and now lives next door to one of his five children. He has had a varied career, owning a firm which cleaned up after industrial disasters, serving as a mortgage broker, and has been a financial adviser for many years. He is a past president of the Jaycees and served as their chairman during the Newtown Bicentennial celebrations. In recent years he has spent much of his time buying, selling and collecting baseball memorabilia.
