Record Crowd For The Newtown Road Race

To the Editor:

A record turn out, amazing volunteers, and generous sponsors combined with perfect weather this past Saturday to make the 2009 Newtown Road Race a huge success. The race attracted 642 runners in the 5K, a new record, and approximately 200 children for the kid’s fun run. This fourth annual race was the largest to date and raised approximately $30,000 for Newtown Youth & Family Services. Pictures and results can be found on www.newtownroadrace.com.

Our volunteers worked hard all summer and turned out in droves early Saturday morning to set up tents, prepare food, pour water, direct traffic, and do all the things necessary to ensure a smooth operation. An event of this size does not happen without an incredible effort — thank you all.

Many, many local businesses helped defray the costs of this race and contribute to the overall amount we are able to raise for NYFS. We would like to thank our sponsors: Newtown Prevention Council, Danbury Hospital, New Balance, Danbury Audi, Stop & Shop, Newtown Foot Care, Newtown Savings Bank, Union Savings Bank, McLaughlin Vineyards, Mr Turtle’s School, Newtown Center Pediatrics, New Hope Community Church, Newtown Newcomers, Associated Refuse, CL&P, Kuman Math & Reading, People’s United Bank, Planters Choice, Porco’s Karate Academy, TNT Partners, Tambascio’s Italian Grill, My Place, Poland Springs, and DCS Promotions.

Special thanks to the Newtown Police Department, Highway Department, Parks & Recreation, the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Connecticut Army National Guard Headquarters 143d Area Support Group. Once again, thanks to The Newtown Bee for its usual great coverage of the race.
