KAREN YASINSKY ‘L’ATALANTE’ ON VIEW AT MIREILLE MOSLER

avv/gs set 9/11 #711901

NEW YORK CITY — Mireille Mosler, Ltd presents “L’Atalante,” Karen Yasinksy’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, presenting animations and drawings in which Yasinsky revives the characters of Jean Vigo’s 1934 cinematic masterpiece of the same title. The exhibit is on view through November 17.

In the beginning of Vigo’s film, Jean, the owner of the barge L’Atalante marries Juliette. The attraction between them is strong but marriage on the barge proves difficult for Juliette and she runs off to Paris. The exhibition will include 30 drawings and collages that closely follow this storyline, each work isolating a specific character of episode in the film. The animations only abstractly reference the narrative, instead using Vigo’s romantic and surreal filmmaking style as the point of departure.

In the stop-motion animation “La Nuit,” Yasinsky depicts Juliette and Jean in the darker passages of their tumultuous relationship. Yasinsky handcrafts puppets, costumes and their environs, bringing to life ambiguous scenarios that explore the often-peculiar nature of human relations.

“La Nuit” cuts between Jean and Juliette in their separate beds (he on the barge and she in a room in Paris) and dream imagery relating to other scenes in the film.

In additional to “La Nuit,” this exhibition will include three drawing animations in which Yasinsky also explores the subtle and strange relationships of Vigo’s characters.
