Country Jamboree Set For September 21

Do you know that square dancing is the official state dance of Connecticut? Do you know that square dancing was developed in America, and is now done in many countries? Did you know that this type of dancing has been performed bi-monthly in Newtown for 40 years?

Back by popular demand for the second year is the Rocking Roosters’ Newtown Country Jamboree. It will be held at the Edmond Town Hall, lower level, on Friday, September 21, from 6:30 to 10:30 pm.

From 6:30 to 7 pm, the Frontier Jammers Band and guest musicians will jam. At 7 pm Bob Paris will lead a demonstration square dance for which no experience is necessary. It will be followed by several types of dancing: fox trot, waltz, two-step, polka, and others. Next Dave Akin, a well-known barn dance caller, will give a demonstration dance in which everyone can join in.

At 8 pm, there will be singing by Ray Onedi, backed by the Frontier Jammers. This will be followed by a club level demonstration square dance tip and an introduction to western style square dancing by Allan Brozek.

Richard Shokite called the first part of a barn dance in Polish last year, and he will be back to give another demonstration.

About 9 pm, Allen Brozek will call a contras dance. This type of dance was done by the pioneers. The evening will be rounded out by square dancing and barn dancing.

Complementary refreshments will be served. A $5 donation is requested. For more information call 264-6855 or 426-5817.
