The 2004 fall soccer season got off to a rousing start as the Newtown Soccer Club's two U12 teams - the Roadrunners (girls) and Strikers (boys) - captured Ridgefield SCOR Warm-Up Tournament championships last weekend.
The 2004 fall soccer season got off to a rousing start as the Newtown Soccer Clubâs two U12 teams â the Roadrunners (girls) and Strikers (boys) â captured Ridgefield SCOR Warm-Up Tournament championships last weekend.
The Raptors (boys U13) were second at the Ridgefield Tournament, winning three of four, while the Hurricanes (girls U14) went 1-2-1. The local boys U10 team also played well over the weekend, splitting four games.
Here are the results:
Girls U12
Roadrunners 3, Darien 0 â Kristen Stoller scored a pair of goals and Lauren Meyer added one. The Roadrunners controlled the game throughout with Casey Rutter posting the shutout without having to make a save. The defensive trio of Ali Pliszka, Kelly OâConner and KellyAnne Brophy shut down the Darien offense. Kaitlin Brophy and Shannon Paproski had strong games controlling the ball.
Roadrunners 6, Ridgefield 0 â Goals came early and often for the Roadrunners. Sarah Attanasio and Lauren Meyer each had two goals while Becca Jaroszewski and Kristin Stoller each netted a goal. Casey Rutter posted her second shutout as Sarah Murtha and Emma Kingsley were solid in the midfield.
Wilton 1, Roadrunners 0 â The Roadrunners controlled most of the game but could not convert several opportunities and Wilton scored an opportune goal late to pull out the win. Alex Israel and Becca Castegner had very good games on offense. Jill Jagoe and Kaitlin Brophy were great as stoppers.
Roadrunners 3, New Canaan 1 â KellyAnne Brophy, Jill Jagoe and Lauren Meyer scored the goals that lifted the Roadrunners to the win. Casey Rutter was solid in goal and the defensive trio constantly throttled the New Canaan offense. Sarah Murtha and Sarah Attanasio had great games setting up numerous scoring opportunities.
Boys U12
Strikers 3, Ridgefield 0 â Dan Lynch, Eric Thornberg and Kyle Moore scored the goals that lifted the Strikers to the win. Lynch also provided an assist. Tony Vacaro, Max Brazo and Josh Engler provided strong defense.. Michael Gould and Kyle Wildman showed a solid passing game. Ishan Tatake shut out Ridgefield in the goal.
Strikers 4, Wilton 3 â Kyle Moore scored twice and Daniel Hufziger and Dan Lynch each added a solo to lead the Strikers. Alex Miller had an assist. Kyle Wildman and Ryan Pasko powered the offense while Aaron Nezvesky, Ishan Tatake and Michael Carrafiello played well.
Strikers 4, Darien 0 â Kyle Moore notched a hat trick and Dan Lynch added one to lead the Strikers to the easy win. Eric Thornberg, Daniel Hufziger, Moore and Lynch provided assists. Max Brazo, Josh Engler and Tony Vacaro anchored the defense while Ryan Pasko and Kyle Wildman kept the pressure on to shut out Darien.
Strikers 6, New Canaan 1 â Michael Carrafiello and Dan Lynch each scored a pair of goals and Tony Vacaro and Kyle Moore added solo goals to lift the Strikers. Assists were provided by Lynch, Eric Thornberg and Moore. Strong offensive pressure was applied by Alex Miller, Michael Gould, Aaron Nezvesky and Ishan Tatake.
Boys U10
East Hampton 2, Newtown 1 â In a tightly played contest, Connor Quinn scored the first goal of the game. Chris Erikson, Christain Mather and Stephen Conway kept up the offensive pressure. Pieter Martino and Noah Sock anchored the defense. Matt Rahtelli was very strong in net.
Suffield 4, Newtown 1 â This was a tough match on a very hot afternoon. Keegan Lombard played well as keeper. Connor Quinn scored Newtownâs lone goal. Nick Barreto, Noah Sock and Eric Fiore played well. Francis Saraceni, Dan Bittman and Sean Elliott were strong on D.
Newtown 7, Colchester 1 â Newtown scored early and often with goals by Nick Barreto, (two, one assisted by Stephen Conway), Andrew Kelley, (assisted by Pieter Martino), Connor Quinn, Christian Mather, Keegan Lombard and Chris Erikson. Eric Fiore played very well as goalie.
Newtown 3, Enfield 0 â Sean Elliott had the shutout for the team with a great game between the pipes. Defensive was outstanding led by Noah Sock, Matt Rahtelli and Francis Saraceni. Goals were scored by Nick Barreto, Stephen Conway (with an assist), Christian Mather (who also had two assists). Dan Bittman played very well on both sides of the field.
Boys U13
Raptors 2, Ridgefield Blue 1 â Danny Clement scored two goals to lift Newtown while strong defensive play came from Ben Mahony, Matt Slattery and Eric Keogler. Andy Lapple and Daniel Greenwood lent strong offensive support.
Raptors 5, New Canaan 0 â Casey Tenney scored a hat trick for Newtown while Matt Baier and Adam Buccino contributed one goal each. Nahba Bropleh and Xhulio Halili shared goalkeeping duties for Newtown.
Raptors 2, Fairfield 1 â Adam Buccino scored first for Newtown and Ben Mahony sealed the win with an over the top penalty kick goal. Benjamin Miles, Matt Iassogna, Kyle Kromberg and George Zaruba all put in strong offensive performances. Danny Clement fought off many attempts as Newtownâs goalkeeper.
Girls U14
Ridgefield 1, Hurricanes 0 â The Hurricanes controlled play and out shot Ridgefield, 10-2, but came up short on the scoreboard. Adelle Cerreta anchored the defense while Sarah Shannon, Cara Colacurcio and Kelly Anne Carney led the offensive charge.
Larchmont 4, Hurricanes 1 â The Hurricanes played a great first half against a strong team from Larchmont, New York, and were tied at the break thanks to a goal from Kasey Schulz off a nice assist from Haley Keane. Larchmont scored three goals in a five-minute span in the second half, though, to put the game away despite strong games from Danielle Norris and Kelley Sullivan in the midfield for the Hurricanes.
Hurricanes 0, Wilton 0 â The Hurricanes offensive troubles continued, but fine defensive performances were turned in by Jen Brewer, Belle Hydock, Erin Nemeth, Nathalie Villa and Emily Weber to help earn the draw.
Hurricanes 1, New Canaan 0 â The Hurricanes dominated most of the play thanks to the strong offensive efforts of Cassie David, Sarah Feinstein and Kasey Schulz, who scored an unassisted goal 30 seconds after moving from midfield to forward. Emily Kluga was strong in goal all tournament and recorded her second shut out of the day.
Girls U11
Power 1, Ridgefield 0 â Kelley Gaston scored from 20 feet out to lift the Power past Ridgefield at the SCOR Tournament. Cristina Naldini had the assist and Kendall Svanda earned the shutout in net.
Power 4, Darien 1 â Ali Korchman had two goals and Jessica Foudy had an assist to lead the Power. Ale Fuentes scored for the Power as did Meaghan Carney on an assist from Maddie Keane.
Power 0, New Canaan 0 â Brooke Leifels and Leah Barrett played solid defense. while Kendall Svanda earned another shutout.
Wilton 3, Power 2 â In the showdown game Newtown needed to defeat Wilton to win the tournament and held a 2-1 lead with six minutes left in the game, but Wilton scored twice (the second time with 10 seconds left) to win. Maddie Keane and Meaghan Carney had goals for Newtown.
