VIPERS 3, SOUTHBURY 0: Newtownâs Northwest District opener against local rival, Southbury, was dominated by a powerful defense that not only suppressed the Southbury attack and held them scoreless, but also created many of the Vipers offensive opportunities. Mat DeBrantes and Sean Weir anchored the backfield while Chris Meier, Kevin Davies and Chris Schreiber all gave tireless minutes. Drew Taylor put the first Viper ball in the net with a sweet right-footed volley from inside the box. Eventually, Southburyâs aggressive play was their own demise, as they could not maintain their pressure and match Newtownâs quick ball movement and team play. Anthony Florez netted two more for the Vipers in the second half as Newtown went on to a 3-0 win. Danny Smith was confident in the Viper net.

ROCKETS 3, WESTON UNITED 3: Emily Fields, Sarah Salbu and Casey Frobey scored as the Rockets tied Weston United in a hotly-contested match. Frobey provided an assist. With the score tied at 2-2, the now recharged Rockets moved the ball swiftly downfield before Westonâs defense could gel and set-up Frobeyâs long, high, scoring shot from a breakaway run. Unfortunately for the Rockets, however, Nellie Farrow was also not done for the day and out-ran the Newtown defense to bounce a rifle shot off the back of Newtownâs goal before her team-mates even began to catch up. This knotted the score at three, where it stood but minutes later as the final whistle blew.  Â
ROCKETS 2, GUILFORD 0: Key stops by Newtown goalie Kayla Mesko and consistently strong play from sweeper Elyssa Samsel helped blunt a Guilford offense spearheaded by Emily Morrison and Chelsey Barber, putting the ball in Guilfordâs end of the field slightly more than Newtownâs. The stand-off continued until the Rockets realized that direct shots alone would not breach the Guilford defense and penetrate thus far perfect goaltending. With but ten minutes remaining Kayla Mesko fed right to Casey Frobey who hit Caitlin Hansen at a dead run near a corner of the Guilford net for the first goal. From there the Rockets poured it on, with Frobey feeding Alex Konneker from inside to right, setting up her high, arching shot from unexpectedly long range to yield the Rocketâs second score. Tara Gaston stood tall in goal.
