Grace Garvey Wissner, 94, of Sandy Hook died August 4 in Sarasota Fla. She was born in Manhattan in 1922. Mrs Wissner and her husband of nearly 69 years, William "Bill," have been snowbirds to the Sarasota area for the last 12 years.

She graduated from Greenwich High School, excelling in sports. She was captain of the girls basketball team and was on the girls field hockey, baseball, and badminton teams. She was also very artistic. Mrs Wissner worked many years as an office assistant for a surgeon in New York City. She met Bill while working in the surgeon's office when he cut off his finger in a work-related accident. During his follow-up appointments, he would only let Grace take care of him.

Wanting to raise their three daughters in a safe and healthy environment, in 1957 Grace and Bill decided to move out of New York City to suburban Sandy Hook. They have lived in the same house in Sandy Hook for 59 years.

After 24 years of being a stay-at-home mom, Mrs Wissner decided to go back to work at age 52. She worked at Danbury Hospital for more than 15 years.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, dancing, listening to music, fishing, and spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who was loved by everyone she met. She was an excellent caregiver to family members, always putting others first.

Her husband; three daughters, Barbara and her husband Michael Sokol, Jeanne and her husband Paul Gartenberg, and Anne Wissner and her partner Tony Hudzik; grandchildren, Anna, Benjamin, Lauren, and Emily, survive her. She was preceded in death by her four brothers and four sisters.

A private service was held at Sarasota Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice.
