Historical Society To Host Children’s Day

At Middle Gate Schoolhouse

Newtown Historical Society will host a Children’s Day at the former schoolhouse on the grounds of Middle Gate School, 12 Cold Spring Road, on Sunday, September 18.

In 1968 the society acquired the circa 1783 schoolhouse and relocated the structure from its original site on Toll Gate Hill (now Route 25) to its present location.

The public is invited to visit between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Costumed docents will conduct “classes” inside the school house for children ages 5–10, while recess activities take place outside. Docents will teach and organize colonial games, such as Graces, Trundling a Hoop, Sack Races, and Tug of War.

Classes will begin promptly at 10:30 am and 11:30 am and will include a hornbook craft. In the event of rain, classes will still be held, but outside events will be canceled.  Admission is free, but donations are welcomed and appreciated.

The historical society is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization. During the year the society offers open houses with living history demonstrations, a lecture series, a summer history camp for kids and many special events. All funding comes from private donations, membership dues, bequests and fundraisers such as an annual house and garden tour and publication sales. New members are always welcome and volunteers are needed to help organize and run events.
