Robert H. Sturges

Sandy Hook Fire Company Volunteer

Robert Harold Sturges, 84, husband of Eleanor (Nyberg) Sturges of Sandy Hook died September 3 in River Glen Health Care Center, Southbury.

He was born in Norwalk on September 11, 1920, a son of Lloyd and Wilhelmina (Naumann) Sturges. Mr Sturges was a US Army veteran of World War II having served in the Solomon Islands, where he earned the Silver Star.

Mr Sturges worked in the maintenance departments at the Sponge Rubber Company in Derby for 26 years and at Hubbell Plastics in Newtown for 20 years. He had also worked for Union Savings Bank in Danbury.

He was a lifetime member of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company. He had also been a driver for eight years for the Newtown Ambulance Association.

Mr Sturges was a 40-year member of the Rocking Roosters Square Dance Club, was a member of the VFW and American Legion of Newtown, and had been a Boy Scout leader. He loved hunting and fishing.

In addition to his wife of 34 years, he is survived by three sons, David Sturges and his wife, Nikki, of Terryville, Peter Sturges and his wife, Debbie, of Sandy Hook and Donald Sturges and his wife, Ampy of the Philippines; five brothers, Edwin Sturges and his wife, Esther, of Redding, Ernest Sturges of Florida, Joseph Brotherton and his wife, Cathy, of Hanson, Mass., and Walter Brotherton and his wife, Shirley, of Naples, Texas; one sister Ruth Shuster of Elsberry, Mo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Beverly Gamble.

A memorial service will be held at a John’s Episcopal Church, 5 Washington Avenue, Sandy Hook, at 11 am, Saturday, September 24. There are no calling hours.
