Work Together, For The Future
To the Editor:
Born and raised in Kenosha (Wisc.), I’m very disheartened by the recent shooting of Jacob Blake. This just magnifies the grief I feel for similar unjust actions. It also brings back the sadness from our own tragedy.
I know we all have our differences and biases. That is part of human makeup. Both in other US locations and Newtown, I have personally experienced anti-semitism first hand.
Nor am I without my own biases. I continually try to know myself better and recognize when I think or act in unjust ways. Personal change does not come easily.
Humans have the innate ability to act on a higher level than physical violence and outright hatred. This is why we are able to communicate with words. This is why we have developed morals, ethics, and the principles of kindness and empathy.
We are in the midst of one of the most challenging times in American history with COVID, economic burdens, dissension and violence, emotional anxiety, and so much fear and uncertainty. This is the time we need to work together for the sake of future generations. If we continue to be ruled by harmful thoughts and actions, we have only ourselves to blame for the many crises to come.
