Technical Possibilities
With Watercolor
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Marija Pavlovich McCarthy demonstrating the technical possibilities with watercolor on Wednesday, September 13, at 7:30 pm. The program is open to the public, free of charge, and will he held at in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).
Ms McCarthy feels that of all of the painting mediums available, watercolor presents the greatest technical challenge to the artist.
âWithin the three variables â paper, choice of color and quantity of water used â there exist countless possibilities of effects, both to anticipate and to discover each time,â said the artist. She will demonstrate, by painting sketches of the most frequently depicted landscape elements such as skies, clouds, trees, hillsides, rocks as well as flowers, the best uses of washes, glazes, wet on dry, wet on wet, hard edges etc. She will give a thorough introduction into transparent color choices and the use of tools.
A Connecticut painter and educator in all mediums, Ms McCarthy has been popular for her insightful critique sessions at past SCAN programs. She teaches at Washington Art Association and is an active member of the New England Watercolor Society, Copley Society of Boston, Connecticut Watercolor Society, and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club.
Ms McCarthy was trained as a painter in her native Yugoslavia and at George Washington University. She has lived and painted in Europe, Asia and North Africa, as well as in several parts of the United States. Her paintings are in hundreds of private collections around the world as well as in museums and governments collections.
Her work has been published in Watercolor and American Artist magazines.
