Motorcyclist Killed In I-84 Crash On Labor Day

By Andrew Gorosko

A motorcyclist was killed in a one-vehicle accident on the night of Monday, September 4, on eastbound Interstate 84, state police said.

Motorcyclist Kenneth J. Hunter, 51, of 111 Home Acres Avenue, Milford, was driving a 1978 BMW N80-7 eastward on I-84 about 8:15 pm, when the motorcycle veered off the left side of the highway and entered the grassy median, state police said. The accident occurred about one-half mile east of the Exit 9 on-ramp.

Hunter was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on the median near the westbound travel lanes.

It is unclear whether Hunter was wearing a helmet. There were no passengers on the BMW. The vehicle was heavily damaged.

Hunter was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, state police said. Hunter suffered traumatic injuries in the accident, according to state police.

A spokeswoman for the chief state medical examiner’s office in Farmington said on September 5 that an autopsy indicated that Hunter died accidentally due to multiple blunt-force neck injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, state police said. The weather was clear at the time and traffic was light. Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters went to the accident.

State police ask anyone who witnessed the motorcycle accident to contact investigating Trooper John Kimball at Troop A in Southbury at 203-267-2200.
