It was chilly, it was damp, but the conditions certainly didn’t scare anyone away last Saturday at the inaugural Newtown Road Race.

Nearly 300 runners had pre-registered for the race as of Friday afternoon but another 100 or so turned out on Saturday morning to help themselves and help Newtown Youth Services. And of the 402 runners who crossed the finish line anywhere from 18 to 57 minutes after the race started, it was Kevin Hoyt of Newtown and Sarah Muhlbradt of Piermont, New York, who were the top male and female runners of the day.

Hoyt was the first overall finisher at 18:16 while Muhlbradt finished seventh overall at 19:00.

“I had a good sense of the course,” said Hoyt, 16, a junior at Newtown High School who runs cross country and track, “and I thought it was pretty easy except for that hill. “It wasn’t my best time, but I came out here to win it and I did.”

And in the spirit of the event Hoyt, who finished fourth at the Newtown Rooster Run back in June, signed his $100 first-place check over to Newtown Youth Services.

For Muhlbradt, the race was a way to keep her legs kicking and to warm up for an upcoming marathon in Omaha, Nebraska.

“I was just hoping for a good solid race,” said Muhlbradt, 28. “I never thought I’d win it, so that’s nice. I thought the race itself was awesome – not too many hills and not too flat – and what a wonderful day to run.”

It was a wonderful day in many other respects, as well, with the Kid’s Fun Runs and the karate demonstrations after the race and the presence of Star 99.9FM.

“I feel like (the committee) worked well together to create a legacy for our community,” said organizer Jennifer Madej.

Make that extended community as the race featured runners not only from all over Connecticut, but also from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida, Louisiana (specifically – New Orleans) and Kentucky.

And talk about a family event? Six members of the Hallisey family from Wethersfield finished the race.

With all that help, the Newtown Road Race was able to raise some $25,000 for the benefit of Newtown Youth Services.
