The next meeting of the Genealogy Club of Newtown will be held on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 pm, via Zoom.

The program this month will focus on “One-Name Studies: What They Are & How They Can Help Your Research,” and it will be presented by professional genealogist Michael Cassara.

A One-Name Study (also known as a Surname Study) is in-depth research on all occurrences of a single surname, rather than research of the ancestors of one person or descendants of one person or couple.

Cassara will explore the different types of one-name studies/surname projects, and will include the latest software and methodology as well as DNA/technology.

Cassara is a professional genealogist and lecturer based in New York City, specializing in Italian/Sicilian genealogy, 20th century US immigration, and genealogical technology. He has frequently presented at national conferences as well as regional societies, including numerous talks at RootsTech and the Association of Professional Genealogists Professional Management Conference, and to local and regional societies throughout the country.

Cassara holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University, and is a graduate of the ProGen Study Group. He currently serves as president of the Italian Genealogical Group (ItalianGen.org) and blogs about his research at DigiRoots.net.

In his “other” life, Cassara is a leading casting director for theater and film, having cast over 500 musicals, plays, and movies.

The Genealogy Club will continue to meet via Zoom until further notice. Meetings are co-sponsored by C.H. Booth Library.

All are welcome to join the presentation by sending a request via email to genclubnewtownct.secretary@gmail.com by September 12. A program link will be sent in response on September 13 or 14.

Those planning to attend are asked to log in around 6:45 so they can be admitted to the room before the meeting begins promptly at 7 pm.

The Genealogy Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month from September through June, and dues are payable in September and October. Dues will be determined at the September meeting.

Anyone who has an interest in their ancestry and family history is welcome, and encouraged to become a member.

Professional genealogist Michael Cassara will offer a program on the different types of one-name searches, including latest software and methodology, for The Genealogy Club of Newtown this month.
