Fall Softball Signups

Registration is underway for Newtown Babe Ruth Fall Softball at www.newtownsoftball.org. Teams will be fielded at the U10 through U16 levels; birth years 1998 and up.  If you are interested in coaching please indicate on the registration form online. 

Rotary Club Golf Classic

The 2007 Jim Osborne Memorial Golf Classic, hosted by the Newtown Rotary Club Foundation, will be held at Tashua Knolls Golf Course in Trumbull on Monday, September 10. All of the net proceeds raised from the event will benefit local and regional charities, with the newly merged Newtown Youth and Family Services serving as primary beneficiary. Many sponsorship options are available, ranging from a $200 tee sponsor to a $2,500 Platinum sponsorship, which includes a foursome of golf, and more. Registration and putting contests will start at 10 am. The tournament – with a scramble format – will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 am. Cocktails and dinner will commence at 4:30 pm with a live auction and raffle prizes at 5:30 pm. Entry fee is $165 and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, refreshments on the course and dinner. The tournament is limited to 32 foursomes. Non-golfers are invited to join the group for cocktails and dinner at 4:30 pm ($50 per person, reservations are required). There will be a Hole-In-One prize (a brand new car) and low gross men, low gross mixes, low gross women, closest to the pin, longest drive and straightest drive prizes, as well. Run For A Cure

The seventh annual Run For A Cure 3-miler will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, at 9:30 am. The race will be held to raise money for the New Milford New York-Presbyterian Hospital Cancer Center and the Relay For Life of the American Cancer Society. There will be a $10 entry fee that can be paid that day between 7:30 and 9:15 am at the Roxbury Congregational Church on Route 317. The top overall male and female finisher will each receive a prize. There also will be a shorter children’s race that day at 9 am, which will have no entry fee. The races are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission, the Roxbury Road Race Series and the church. Walkers are encouraged and they will head out at 9:15 am, 15 minutes before the main races starts. Refreshments will be provided. Wicked Softball

The Connecticut Wicked 12-and-under travel fastpitch softball team will be holding private tryouts for the 2008 spring/summer season. The team will be formed in September and begin training immediately. To arrange for a private tryout, email coachK@thewickedsoftball.com

Veillette Benefit Road Race

The second Bob Veillette 5K Road Race and Walk will be held on Sunday, September 16 to benefit a popular Waterbury journalist stricken by a stroke. More than 500 people participated in last year’s race and walk, which raised more than $42,000. The event will be held rain or shine. The 3.1-mile road race begins at 1:30 pm. Walkers start at 1:40 pm. The course begins outside Waterbury City Hall on Grand Street, winds through downtown streets and finishes in front of Library Park near the Republican-American building. Registration begins at noon – but pre-registration is encouraged. Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Race-day registration is $25 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under. The first 500 runners and walkers will receive t-shirts and goody bags.
