A Formidable Team

To the Editor:

As Republican candidates for First Selectman and Selectman, Joe Borst and Paul Mangiafico head up a distinguished slate for the 2007 election. Both these men have an impressive combination of business experience and public service that will serve them (and us) well as they address the enormous challenges Newtown faces — from ensuring the wise and prudent use of the Fairfield Hills property to rapidly escalating taxes to balancing the needs of all its citizens.

Joe, currently a member of the Legislative Council, where he is liaison to the Board of Education, is well known to the community. A former selectman, he has served on numerous town boards and is acquainted with the inner workings of government. He promises to be a “good listener” and work to create greater efficiencies among the various boards and commissions. He is committed to completing Newtown’s strategic plan.

For the past four years, Paul has devoted his energies to serving on the Board of Education. He is known for doing his homework and common-sense approach to issues and has the courage to stand for his convictions even if he is the sole voice of dissent. A retired senior management corporate executive, he is actively sought after as a consultant and speaker. Not the least of his many qualities is his sense of humor — an invaluable asset for defusing the contentious situations that can arise when people are passionate about their town.

Together, Joe and Paul are a formidable team. At this time in Newtown’s history, they embody the vision and leadership we need.
