Police Reports | August 23 to September 4, 2018
Sandy Hook Collision
Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Jeremiah Road, Pole Bridge Road, and Philo Curtis Road about 8:50 am on September 4.
The collision involved Richard Auerbach, 49, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2017 Lexus RC-300 coupe, and motorist Ryan Roberts, 33, of Hartford, who was driving a 2011 Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Ambulance volunteers from the Stony Hill section of Bethel treated Roberts for pain and released him at the scene. Police issued Auerbach a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.
Church Hill Accident
Police report a two-vehicle accident on Church Hill Road, near its intersection with Commerce Road, about 11:37 am on September 4.
Motorist Maxwell Beaudry, 31, of Brookfield was driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz C300 4-Matic sedan westward in the westbound straight-ahead lane of Church Hill Road, as motorist Yoshizo Nakano, 89, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan westward in a parallel travel lane, which is designated for left-turns-only onto southbound Commerce Road, police said.
The two vehicles continued traveling westward on Church Hill Road, and the Dodge struck the Mercedes. There were no injuries. Police issued Nakano a written warning for failure to obey traffic control markings.
Brushy Hill Crash
Police report that a one-car accident occurred about 6:30 am on Saturday, September 1, at a small bridge above a stream on Brushy Hill Road, just west of its intersection with Elm Drive.
Because the accident happened along the course for the 13th Annual Newtown Road Race, race officials modified the route that runners followed when completing the 5K event at Dickinson Park.
Motorist Elizabeth Mottola, 17, of Newtown was driving a 2006 Honda Accord eastward on Brushy Hill Road, when the right side of the Honda struck a wall on the small bridge. The vehicle then went off the right side of the street and the auto’s front end struck a guard post.
There were no injuries. Police issued Mottola an infraction for making a restricted turn.
DUI Charge
Police report that at about 8:39 pm on August 31, they spotted motorist Christopher Golias, 50, of Newtown driving a vehicle over the road’s center line on Meadowbrook Road, so they stopped him near 22 Meadowbrook Road to investigate.
Police charged Golias with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. After processing, Golias posted $100 bail for a September 18 court appearance.
Rollover
At about 8:49 am on August 30, motorist Stephen Jacober, 62, of Danbury, who was driving a 2008 Honda Accord northward on Hattertown Road, while negotiating a curve in the road, traveled off the road’s right shoulder about 600 feet south of Hattertown Road’s intersection with Boggs Hill Road, police said. The auto rolled over on its roof.
The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Jacober to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. Jacober received an infraction for making a restricted turn, according to police.
I-84 Traffic
At about 8:01 am on August 29, while traffic was slowing on westbound Interstate 84, about 1,500 feet east of Exit 11, motorist Rosemarie Casesi, 28, of Marietta, Ga., who was driving a 2017 Hyundai Accent, struck the rear end of a 2009 Honda Odyssey minivan, driven by Aimee Zarcone, 26, of Brookfield, state police said.
There were no injuries. Casesi received an infraction for following too closely.
Two Big Trucks
State police report that at about 9:25 pm on August 29, trucker Jerman Miller, 33, of Montgomery, Ala., who was driving a 2007 Freightliner heavy truck, unsafely merged and sideswiped a 2005 Freightliner heavy truck driven by Billy Ray Caulder, 69, of Randleman, N.C.
There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Miller for failure to maintain the proper lane.
Flagpole Accident
A two-vehicle accident occurred at the Main Street flagpole intersection about 5:01 pm on August 28.
Police report that motorist Michael Paradise, 33, of Redding, who was driving a 1998 GMC Jimmy SUV, was traveling westward on Church Hill Road and then stopped at a stop sign, as motorist Nerlande Daniel, 33, of Newtown was driving a 2018 Nissan Rogue SUV northward on Main Street.
Paradise, who intended to drive the GMC across the five-way intersection to enter West Street, then entered the intersection and collided with the Nissan, police said. Daniel reported pain, but declined medical attention. Police issued Paradise an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.
Toyota Vs Toyota
On eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 8:49 pm on August 28, motorist David Waters, 37, of Danbury, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Prius hybrid auto, stopped for halted traffic and was then struck from behind by motorist James Wilkie, 21, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2011 Toyota Yaris subcompact car, state police said.
There were no injuries. Wilkie received an infraction for following too closely.
Honda Vs Honda
At about 5:36 pm on August 27, motorist Kristine Deciucis, 47, of Shelton, who was driving a 2017 Honda Pilot eastward on Sugar Street, near Juniper Road, stopped due to traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by an eastbound 2013 Honda Civic driven by Emma McGowan, 22, of Woodbury, police report.
There were no injuries. Mc Gowan received an infraction for following too closely.
Jeep Onto Tire
State police report that motorist Estefania Vega, 27, of Loganville, Ga., was driving a 2016 Jeep Cherokee SUV eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, about 7:56 am on August 25, when a tire fell off the back of a truck that was traveling in front of the Jeep.
The loose tire then became wedged beneath the Jeep, damaging the vehicle, state police said. There were no injuries. The truck from which the tire fell did not stop, and the truck was not located.
Pickup Vs SUV
Police report that at about 8:31 pm on August 25, on a curve on Toddy Hill Road, about 500 feet north of its intersection with Marlin Road, motorist Kevin Dunn, 64, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2010 Ford Ranger pickup truck northward, experienced a tire blowout, resulting in the Ford crossing the road’s center line and then colliding with a southbound 2010 Kia Soul SUV driven by Anthony Marucci, 30, of Danbury. The Kia carried three passengers.
Police report Dunn received a suspected minor injury. Police verbally warned Dunn for failure to keep to the right on a curve.
Rear-Ender
At about 2:39 pm on August 24, motorist Phillip Essenhigh, 62, of Easton, who was driving a 2017 Lexus NX-200T sports car southward on South Main Street, near Cedar Hill Road, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by southbound motorist William Mosher, 23, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2008 Honda Civic, police said.
There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Mosher for following too closely.
Sugar Street Accident
About 4:16 pm on August 23, motorist Christopher Schiron, 46, of Southbury was driving a 2015 Subaru Impreza auto eastward on Sugar Street, as motorist Matthew Kornhaas, 21, of Newtown was driving a 2010 Toyota RAV-4 SUV westward there, according to police.
The Subaru then attempted to make a left turn to enter West Street, resulting in the two vehicles colliding. There were no injuries. Schiron received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way at an intersection, police said.
