Mary M. Holian, Teacher And Volunteer, Dies At 83
Mary M. Holian, 83, wife of the late attorney John F. Holian, of 8 Main Street, Newtown, died September 4 in her home.
Mrs Holian was born in Waterbury October 8, 1916, a daughter of the late James and Julia (Dineen) Meehan. She was a graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School and attended Catholic University in Washington, DC. Mrs Holian graduated from Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, in 1937 with a degree in English and history.
She then began a career in teaching. Her first position was at Woodbury High School. She then spent most of her career at Housatonic Regional High in Falls Village.
Mrs Holian was a resident of Newtown the past 49 years. She was a past president and longtime member of the Newtown Visiting Nurse Association. In honor of her long service, the VNA established the Mary M. Holian Scholarship, awarded each year to a Newtown student planning to pursue a nursing career.
Mrs Holian was a former trustee and past president of the Cyrenius H. Booth Library. She was a member of the Connecticut Association of Community Health Care.
She was the mother of attorney Timothy J. Holian of Newtown. She is also survived by a daughter, Sarah J. Holian of Ridgefield; a brother, Dr B. Joseph Meehan of Brookfield; a sister, Julia McGrath of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Rose of Lima Church September 7. Interment was in St Rose Cemetery.
