On August 22, hundreds of Newtown residents gathered to celebrate Mary Hawley’s birthday on the patio of the C.H. Booth Library. At least 230 people came for free Ferris Acres Creamery ice cream, but the representatives from Ferris ran out of ice cream. It was estimated that 20 more people came after the ice cream ran dry.

The ice cream social is an annual celebration for Mary Hawley’s birthday in recognition of her dedication to Newtown. Hawley bought the property that the library sits on and left funds in her will to support the library for years to come.
