Rocking Roosters Plan Two Open Houses
Rocking Roosters Plan
Two Open Houses
Area residents will have an opportunity to try square dancing on two consecutive Wednesdays, September 13 and September 20, when the Rocking Roosters Square Dance Club of Newtown has its two annual open houses and square dance demonstrations. The events will begin at 8 pm both weeks and will be at the Sand Hill Shopping Plaza Mall (next to TJ Maxx) on Route 25. Both events are free and refreshments will be served.
According to John and Beverly McKeone, club presidents, those interested in attending need never have square danced before. For those who would like to learn more square dancing, the club will offer weekly lessons throughout the fall and winter, staring September 27. Lessons will be taught by Allen Brozek, a well-known area caller and long-time square dancer.
Dancers who successfully complete the lessons are eligible for membership in the Rocking Rooster club or any of the other clubs in the area. They will also be able to dance with any square dance club anywhere in the world. Square dance is called in English everywhere.
Square dance has its roots in English country dance, but over many years has evolved into a uniquely American dance form. It is the official state dance of Connecticut, and combines a high level of aerobic exercise with fun and a friendly social atmosphere.
Those planning to attend the open houses should dress casually and comfortably, and low-heeled shoes should be worn. For further information call Art and Joan Scott at 270-8301 or JJâs Square Dance Shop at 270-1037.
