Snapshot: Christal Preszler
Occupation: I am the grants coordinator for the Planning Department for the Town of Newtown, and I work on the Fairfield Hills-related projects and oversee fair and affordable housing.
Family: I have three children. Julie is a senior at Newtown High School, Scott is a freshman at the high school, and Nick is in eighth grade at Newtown Middle School.
Pets: We have two rescue cats that we got from the Animal Center, Malibu and Charlotte. Malibu is a Siamese and yellow tabby mix and Charlotte is a sweet little tabby.
How long have you lived in Newtown? I’ve lived in Newtown for 20 years, except for one year when I lived in Fargo, N.D. That was a job-related move, and then we moved back here.
What do you like to do in your free time? I love being outside, working around my yard, running, biking, hiking, swimming — anything, as long as it’s outside. We spend time with friends and family. I enjoy being with them, especially the kids. I spend a lot of time at band and soccer activities with my kids, and a lot of time in my car.
What is on the radio while you are driving around? We listen to whatever is agreeable to everybody who is in the car. It might be Top 40, music from the 80s, or some rock.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? It seems like the most recent place I’ve been is my favorite. Two of my recent favorites are Burlington, Vt., and Old Quebec City. We were in Burlington last summer, and I loved it there. This summer we camped in a KOA campground back from the river, just a few minutes outside of Old Quebec City. I like quiet places, much to the dismay of my children.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I like Main Street and Ram Pasture. I like the historic parts of Newtown and the farms. I like the restaurants here, too. There’s a good variety of food.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? There isn’t one person or thing. It’s little bits of people I’ve met, and things I’ve read. It’s kind of a combination of influences. Every experience you have has an influence on you.
Did you have a favorite toy, growing up? My favorite “toy” was the rocks in my New Milford backyard. They were big, big rocks that you could hide in and climb over. They’d been blown up with dynamite and were just all over. We spent hours playing on them. We always played hide-n-seek in them, and my sister could never find me. I’d stay hidden until she gave up and would go in to tell our mother she couldn’t find me.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? I don’t eat them often, but I love doughnuts. I don’t have a favorite flavor. They’re all good.
