9/11 Public Memorial Service Planned
BROOKFIELD CENTER â On Friday, September 11, at 10 am, a public service of remembrance for the victims of 9/11 will be held at the garden behind Brookfield Historical Society.
The service will be conducted by members of Brookfield Ecumenical Clergy Association, made up of representatives of the townâs Christian churches. It will be highlighted by a moment of silence and the tolling of a solitary bell to honor the memory of the 2,973 victims who perished.
Following the ceremony attendees will be invited to visit the award-winning exhibit âSeptember 11, 2001: Connecticut Responds and Reflects,â on view at Brookfield Historical Society Museum. The exhibit honors the memory of the 152 Connecticut victims who died on 9/11 through poignant photographs, images, personal objects, and a memorial library containing a volume on each victim.
In addition, displays of how the state and its residents positively responded both during and after the event can be viewed throughout the exhibit, coupled with living history recordings of personal testimonies, interviews, and news coverage of 9/11.
A special Brookfield section contains personal testimonials from eyewitnesses, stories of Brookfield first responders at Ground Zero, and objects including personal IDs recovered and returned to one former Brookfield resident who was in the North Tower of the World Trade Center when United flight 11 struck the building.
(A full feature about the exhibition appeared in the August 21, 2009, issue of The Newtown Bee and is also available at NewtownBee.com).
