Family Open House

At Yoga Center

WOODBURY — Woodbury Yoga Center will host a free family day open house on Saturday, September 11, beginning at 1:30 pm. All are invited to sample some of the various styles of yoga offered, partake in a community circle or vegetarian cooking class, group chant and meditation, and even enjoy a nutritious and delicious vegetarian meal. A special program for children will also be available, running from 2:20 to 4 pm (simultaneously with adult classes) and also during meditation time.

Sample classes have been set up as follows: 1:30 to 2:15, seniors or teen or chair yoga; 2:20 to 3, yoga basics or yoga flow; 3:05 to 4, community circle or vegetarian cooking class; 4:05 to 4:15, chanting; 4:15 to 4:45, meditation, with free instruction also available; and 5 pm, complimentary vegetarian supper courtesy of the vegetarian cooking class.

“The teachers are wonderful and the setting is a sanctuary of peace and tranquility,” says Ann Gaffney, a WYC student and volunteer. “Just being on the property makes you feel more relaxed. I truly hope the community comes out to participate in this open house to see and experience this for themselves.”

Community is the central theme for the open house, which coincides with the yoga center’s 20th anniversary.

“When we started talking about how to best celebrate our 20th anniversary the theme that kept coming up was community: How to encourage, nurture and continue to foster that sense of community that has gotten lost in today’s fragmented society,” said WYC co-founder and director Janaki Pierson. “For those reasons and others we chose to celebrate on September 11; [this will be] a chance to provide a comforting and safe environment for people to gather and participate in uplifting activities on a day that marks a somber event.

“Through community we can create peace within ourselves and the world,” she continued.

Ms Pierson has been teaching meditation for over 20 years and has been established in her own daily practice for 29 years. She teaches extensively throughout New England in medical, educational, corporate and community settings.

Since the center’s inception 20 years ago as a non-profit education facility, Woodbury Yoga Center continues to enjoy the freedom and sole focus on providing quality instruction in the traditional time-honored teachings of the science of mediation and yoga. At Woodbury Yoga Center, students and teachers share the experience of seeing that the answers to all questions of living lie within each person and are accessible through daily practice.

WYC’s purpose is to share this understanding and the benefits of these practices with neighbors throughout the region. Programs and courses are open to people of all backgrounds.

The science of yoga supports the religious diversity of the community.

WYC is a tax-exempt not-for-profit educational institution under Federal Statue 501(c)(3). It is at 122 Westside Road in Woodbury. Call 203-263-2254 or visit www.WoodburyYogaCenter.org for more information.
