Book Sale To Offer More Than 160,000 Books

By Jan Howard

More than 160,000 books and records in 76 categories are included in the Friends of the C.H. Booth Library annual Labor Day Book Sale that begins Saturday and continues through Wednesday, September 8, from 9 am to 5 pm at Bridgeport Hall on the Fairfield Hills campus.

Adult admission will be charged on Saturday only, $10 from 9 am to noon and $5 from noon to 5 pm. On Monday, all books and records will be half price. On Tuesday, shoppers will fill bags of books for $5, and on Wednesday, everything that remains will be free.

Numbered admission tickets will be on sale Friday, from noon to 9 pm, and Saturday at 8 am at Bridgeport Hall.

“We want to thank the community for its generous donation of books,” Chairman Joanne Zang said Tuesday. “We’re looking forward to another successful sale. We have the best selection of books we have ever had, and the most rare books in recent years.”

“We’re more organized than we’ve ever been,” volunteer Julie Starkweather said, noting that one room contains only fiction. “There are close to 30,000 paperbacks,” she added.

Volunteer Jay Diaz noted that there would be a raffle throughout the sale for a gift basket in the romance section.

The sale will be user friendly. Shoppers will be given detailed maps to locate the 76 categories, which includes a new one on royalty.

Hardcover and paperback fiction will be featured in one room, alphabetized by author and organized into subcategories, such as classics, mysteries, science fiction, and romance. Nonfiction, located in another room, will include a large selection of alphabetized biographies, plus categories such as art, architecture, math, engineering, computers, history, cooking, gardening, children’s books, home improvement, and travel, among others.

There is also a collectibles room, a special feature for dealers and bibliophiles, where hundreds of collectible books are offered for sale. Some of these books are desirable for qualities other than content, such as age and condition, pictures and illustrations, limited printing, or an especially good dust jacket.

The children’s corner, with its carpeted reading area, contains thousands of fiction and nonfiction books organized by type, reading level, and series for easy selection. Also offered are a large selection of paperbacks, and pop-up, board, electronic, and classic books, such as Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, and Star Wars

A music room will feature records, tapes, and CDs, organized by type. Classical recordings are sorted by major composers.

All proceeds benefit the library. For more information, call the Booth Library at 426-4533 or visit the website at www.biblio.org/chbooth/booksale.htm.
