Minor Disruptions To Mail Delivery Reported

With numerous trees blocking roads in Newtown and Sandy Hook, and broken electrical wires dangling over many streets, delivering mail has not been a pleasure ride the past few days for Newtown’s mail carriers. Nonetheless, said Newtown acting supervisor Lori Rich, “It is not as bad as you would think. On the first day out, Monday, most mail carriers came back reporting 100 percent delivery, and others only unable to get to one or two roads on his or her routes,” said Ms Rich.

Power was back on at the Commerce Road facility as of 12:30 pm, Wednesday, August 31, she said. Any mail that is not deliverable will be held at the Newtown Commerce Road branch for pickup. Undeliverable mail is returned by the carrier each evening.

“If roads are still blocked and people are not getting the mail delivered, they can pick it up at the window here every couple of days,” Ms Rich said.

“Carriers are checking daily to see if roads are accessible,” she said, and if they are, the mail carrier will deliver any mail held at the Newtown office, the following day.

“Progress is being made,” said Ms Rich, so regular delivery should soon be the norm.
