Former US Diplomat To Discuss

America’s Foreign Policies And Ideals

Sandy Hook resident George Paik, former US diplomat and current vice chairman of The World Affairs Forum, will discuss the American identity as it relates to foreign policy, Thursday, September 8, at 7 pm, in the meeting room of the CH Booth Library. Mr Paik will address questions such as “Is it possible to shape a realistic foreign policy that is consistent with our ideals? Can those ideals define our foreign policy mission? What exactly is our national interest?” And “Do our foreign policy doctrines and capabilities meet our needs?”

This talk is meant to diffuse confusion and contention on these questions by offering an updated view of what it means to be American, to address modern complications, and offer guidance on public conduct. It will suggest some specific measures to shape an overall strategy that will exemplify America’s commitment to freedom, inspire Americans to live by it, and prove the viability of a free society.

Between 1988 and 1995, Mr Paik was an officer in the US Foreign Service. He served in overseas tours, in political affairs and consular services at the US Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago, and in political affairs at the embassy in Brasilia, Brazil. He also served at the State Department in Washington D.C., with the title of International Economist. His duties in the various posts included human rights work, coverage of today’s ruling Workers’ Party, regional reporting from the Amazon, analysis of a presidential impeachment in Brazil, political and labor reporting, support of US ship and aircraft visits, US police training support in Trinidad, and policy formation work regarding the nexus of trade and environmental issues in Washington.

The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. For more information or to register, call the library at 203-426-4533.
