TBICO Is Awarded Grant

The Bridge to Independence and Career Opportunities (TBICO) was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation’s Financial Management Assistance Fund to seed a new financial staff position.

TBICO is a community-based nonprofit organization based in Danbury and serving residents of the greater Danbury area and surrounding towns. The mission of TBICO is to break the generational cycle of poverty by helping people develop the skills they need to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. At the core of the TBICO mission is empowerment and the belief that people have the right and the responsibility to take control of their lives so they can become decisionmakers and directors of their own future.

“Our role is to be a catalyst, to provide the tools and the supports that encourage change without creating another layer of dependency,” explains LouAnn Bloomer, president and CEO of TBICO.

Offering programs and services designed to address the root cause of poverty, rather than its symptoms or effects, TBICO is an organization that promotes self-reliance and economic independence through gainful employment, improved literacy skills, and better money management decisions. The success of program graduates has resulted in exponential growth requiring creation of a financial staff position to provide the skills and expertise that will help to move TBICO to the next organizational level.

The Fairfield County Community Foundation (FCCF) promotes the growth of philanthropy to strengthen local communities and the region. Since 1992, it has awarded more than $52 million in grants, including $7.5 million awarded last year. More than 4,700 individuals and organizations have established charitable funds and contributed to existing funds that support community and economic development, education, health and wellness, children and families, the environment, and arts and culture.

The community foundation also provides philanthropic advisory services and develops initiatives to address critical community issues. It is in compliance with the Council on Foundations’ national standards for community foundations. FCCF’s net assets are currently approaching $90 million.
