Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*AARP DRIVING CLASS on Monday and Tuesday, September 10–11, 12:30 to 4:30 pm. You must attend both classes, the fee is $10 the day of. Call to reserve your spot.

*A DAY AT THE RACES at Monticello, N.Y., with live harness racing on Tuesday, September 11. Depart at 9 am; cost is $38.

*CRAFT CLASS of Chinese brush painting, Sumi-e, on Tuesday, September 11, at 1 pm.

*LIFELINE SCREENING on Friday, September 14, including preventive health screening for stroke, heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes.

*Join BOB MEL while he performs a series of “Americana” songs on Thursday, September 20, at 1 pm. Popcorn and beverage will be served.

*BINGO on Wednesday, September 26, at 1 pm.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOT CLINIC by appointment only on Tuesday, October 2, 10 am to noon, and Tuesday, October 23, 10 am to noon. Call 270-4310.

*JERRY KING LIVE presents a Cole Porter Review on Thursday, October 11, at 1 pm, at the Senior Center.

*RICHARD CLARK performs a solo show of the incredible Andrew Carnegie, on Tuesday, October 16, at 1 pm, at the Senior Center.

 

Day Trips

*Enjoy lunch buffet at the NEWPORT PLAYHOUSE and Cabaret Restaurant and see the comedic show The Miss Firecracker Contest on Thursday, September 27. After the show, enjoy some free time in Newport. Depart at 7:30 am; cost is $90.

*On Thursday, October 4, have lunch and see PHANTOM at Westchester Broadway Theatre. Depart at 9:30 am; tickets are $71.

*Depart at 7 am, Thursday, October 11, for ADAMS FARM & APPLES in Southern Vermont. Enjoy the foliage, the Barn Theater, a comfortable wagon ride, lunch at the Old Red Mill Tavern, and The Apple Barn; $85 per person.

*OKTOBERFEST with Ace In The Hole on Wednesday, October 24. A day of music, song, dance, food and drink. Depart at 9:30 am; $79 per person.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9, with lunch at Rudy’s. Early booking special, $105 per person.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: CLOSED for Labor Day

Tuesday: AM, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

September 3–7

Monday: September 3: Labor Day: Closed

Tuesday: September 4: Stuffed shells with marinara sauce, sausage, tossed salad with cucumber and Italian dressing, garlic bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Honey roasted chicken quarter, sweet potato pone, French green beans, seedless rye bread, pistachio pudding with whipped topping.

Thursday: Shrimp bisque with crackers, cold cut grinder made with ham, turkey, salami on grinder roll with lettuce, tomato and mustard, carrot and raisin salad, fruit cocktail.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: September 10: Pineapple glazed ham, scalloped potatoes, bean and carrot blend, seedless rye bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: September 11: Hamburger on a roll with lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, baked beans, melon slice, cranberry juice.
