Police Arrest One Driver On DUI Charge At Checkpoint

At a sobriety checkpoint during which police stopped an estimated 800 vehicles on Route 25, they found one motorist whom they determined to be intoxicated and charged him with several offenses.

Police conducted the checkpoint on South Main Street, south of Borough Lane, on the night of Saturday, August 25, and early morning hours of Sunday, August 26.

Police stopped each of the 800 vehicles that passed the checkpoint to interview motorists on whether they had been using alcohol or drugs.

About 10:30 pm August 25, police stopped motorist William Sherman, 20, of 43 Orchard Hill Road whom they then charged with driving under the influence, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police used their German shepherd Baro at the checkpoint to check for the presence of drugs in vehicles.

After he posted $100 bail, police released Sherman for a September 11 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Earlier that night, at about 9:30 pm, police spotted northbound motorist Adelson DaSilva, 21, of Danbury suddenly turn into the driveway of a closed business and then head southward in an apparent attempt to avoid being stopped at the checkpoint.

Police followed DaSilva and stopped him to investigate. They issued DaSilva an infraction for driving without a license and verbally warned him for making a turn without signaling.

Also, at about 11:35 pm August 25, police noticed that southbound motorist Gilberto Aredes, 50, of Danbury, who was driving a Toyota Corolla, stopped and then turned around, heading northward, apparently to avoid the checkpoint.

Police said they stopped Aredes to investigate, after which they issued him infractions for driving without a license and for driving without a front marker plate. They also verbally warned him for making an improper turn.

Additionally, police issued 21 warnings at the checkpoint, most of them for driving without a front marker plate.
