Canoe Missing

Police said this week they received a report on August 3 that a canoe is missing from its grassy storage area at the end of Riverside Road in the Riverside section of Sandy Hook. Police described the vessel as a dark green, full-size Town & Country-brand canoe which has the words Shay's Addiction posted on either side of the boat. Also, the canoe has a black painted skull and crossbones image on its hull.

Police said the owner had last seen the canoe in June. If the canoe was borrowed by someone, the owner asks that it be returned, police said. If it was stolen, police ask that anyone with information on its whereabouts contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

 

Volvo vs Debris

Police report that motorist Laurence Hart, 64, of Newtown was driving a 2008 Volvo XC-70 westward on Sugar Street, about 250 feet east of its intersection with Head O' Meadow Road, at about 9:30 pm on August 11 following a severe storm.

The Volvo drove over a large piece of debris on the unlit road, which may have been a fallen tree branch, resulting in two flat tires, police said. There were no injuries.

 

Multiple Charges

Police said they received a report on the afternoon of August 13 that a woman walking along Berkshire Road, near High Rock Road, appeared to be very upset, so they went to the area to conduct a health-and-welfare check on her.

Police said they found the woman in question, Katherine Sullivan, 51, of Sandy Hook, near the intersection of Osborne Hill Road and Yogananda Street, after which they transported her to the police station.

Police said they charged Sullivan with breach of peace and violation of a protective order in connection with an August 13 incident. Additionally, on warrants police charged Sullivan with six individual counts of first-degree failure to appear in court. Police said they held her on $37,500 bail for an August 15 court appearance.

 

Out Of Control

State police said that motorist Guillermo Echavarria, 49, of New Milford, who was driving a 2005 GMC Envoy SUV westward on Interstate 84, about 150 feet west of Exit 9, at about 12:04 am on August 14, lost control of the vehicle and then struck some guardrailing.

State police said Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported the driver and three passengers to Danbury Hospital to be checked for possible injuries. State police said they took no enforcement.

 

Flagpole Intersection

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the Main Street flagpole intersection early on the morning of August 14.

At about 12:30 am, motorist Alysha Ashby, 31, of Newtown was driving a 2015 GMC Terrain southward on Main Street, as motorist Madeline Sieber, 18, of Newtown was driving a 2007 Saturn Ion westward on Church Hill Road, police said.

The Saturn then violated a stop sign at the intersection, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they issued Sieber an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

 

Two-Car Accident

A two-car accident occurred at the busy intersection of Wasserman Way and Berkshire Road about 8:15 am on August 15, police said.

In that incident, motorist Ana Deoliveira, 20, of Danbury, who was driving a 1999 Honda Accord, struck the rear end of a 2013 Kia Forte driven by Kimberly Omelia, 37, of Middletown, N.Y., police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Deoliveira a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

 

Butterfield Crash

A two-truck collision occurred on Butterfield Road, near that street's intersection with Georges Hill Road, about 4:45 pm on August 16, according to police.

In that incident, the left exterior rear-view mirror of a Ford F-350 pickup truck being driven westward by a local man was struck by the left exterior rear-view mirror of a small white box truck which was traveling eastward, police said. There were no injuries.

The box truck driver continued onward after the collision occurred. Police are investigating.

 

Interstate Collision

State police report that at about 10:30 pm on August 17, on eastbound Interstate 84, about 500 feet west of Exit 10, motorist Erin Albano, 48, of Southbury, who was driving a 2011 Mazda 3 auto, made an unsafe lane change and sideswiped a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer truck driven by Christopher Dolan, 32, of Warwick, R.I.

bodycopy: There were no injuries. State police said Albano failed to maintain the proper lane.

 

Arrest Warrant

Newtown police report that they went to New Haven on August 18 and served an arrest warrant against Michael Tallman, 24, of Waterbury, charging him with sixth-degree larceny, illegal use of a credit card, and identity theft in connection with a past incident in Newtown.

Police said that Tallman cooperated late last year with an ex-girlfriend in the theft of a credit card and also the illegal withdrawal of money from the account of an elderly person for whom the ex-girlfriend worked as a caretaker. Police said they arrested the ex-girlfriend on criminal charges in January.

Sixth-degree larceny involves the theft of less than $500. Police said that after processing Tallman's arrest on August 18, they released him on $15,000 bail for a September 8 court appearance.

 

Church Hill at Boulevard Collision

At about 4:20 pm on August 18, motorist Paul Mangiafico, 80, of Newtown was driving a 2006 Buick Lucerne sedan westward on Church Hill Road, as motorist Dori Farley, 18, of Newtown was driving a 2006 Volkswagen Passat sedan southward on The Boulevard, according to police.

The Volkswagen stopped at a stop sign at the end of The Boulevard and then entered Church Hill Road, resulting in the two cars colliding, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Farley an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

 

Intersection Accident

At a stop sign on northbound Key Rock Road at its intersection with Sugar Street at about 6:40 pm on August 19, motorist Kyle Runfola, 26, of Norwalk, who was driving a 2016 Nissan Rogue SUV, struck the rear end of a 2007 Toyota Yaris driven by Shea-Kathryn Silver, 25, of Naugatuck, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Runfola for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

 

Evading Responsibility

Police report they are investigating an incident in a Sandy Hook Center parking lot involving an unknown motorist who struck an unoccupied parked vehicle and then drove away without reporting the collision.

The incident occurred sometime between midnight and 2:35 am on August 20. Based on evidence found at the scene, an apparently white passenger vehicle backed into a parked 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, damaging the Subaru, police said. The incident occurred in the parking lot behind 100 Church Hill Road.

Minivan vs Pole

Motorist Tyler Liven, 19, of Trumbull, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Caravan minivan northward near 63 South Main Street about 7:25 am on August 18, drove off the right side of the road and then struck a utility pole, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Liven for making a restricted turn.

 

Ford vs Nissan

At about 7:45 am on August 18, motorist Venice Robinson, 28, of Danbury was driving a 2014 Nissan Sentra southward on South Main Street, as northbound motorist Christine Hermes, 40, of Newtown, who was driving a 2015 Ford Escape, was traveling northward, police said.

The Ford then attempted to make a left turn onto Country Club Road, police said. The two vehicles collided.

Police said both drivers reported pain, but both refused medical treatment. Police said they issued Hermes an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

 

Two-Vehicle Accident At Four-Way Intersection

Police report a two-vehicle accident occurred at the four-way intersection of Hattertown Road, Poverty Hollow Road, and Key Rock Road about 6:20 pm on August 18. Each of the four legs of that intersection is controlled by a stop sign.

The collision involved motorist Kristin Kreho, 30, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Impreza, and motorist Isabel Kinney, 26, of Newtown, who was driving a 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps checked out Kinney at the scene for a pain complaint, but did not transport her, police said. Kreho received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

 

DUI Arrest

Police said that at about 10 pm on August 20, they received a report concerning a Chevrolet pickup truck that was being driven erratically near the intersection of Main Street and Sugar Street, so they responded in seeking to find that driver.

Police report they located the vehicle in question and investigated, charging its driver Brian Nadriczny, 59, of Sandy Hook, with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn. Nadriczny was released on $80 bail after arrest processing for a September 2 court appearance, police said.

 

South Main Street

At about 8:13 am on August 23, motorist Charles Destival, 47, of Newtown, who was driving a 2017 Kia Sportage SUV northward near 99 South Main Street, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Leslie Lucero, 21, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2002 Mercedes-Benz SUV, police said.

Destival received a possible injury, police said. Lucero received an infraction for traveling an unreasonable distance apart, police said.

 

Police report that motorist Joshua Jones, 27, of Newtown was driving a Buick LeSabre sedan near 52 Maltbie Road about 9:44 pm, on August 18, when the vehicle went off the roadway, struck some guardrailing, and then caught fire. Jones was not injured. Botsford volunteer firefighters responded to the scene to put out the blaze. Police said that after investigating, they charged Jones with driving under the influence, making a restricted turn, and driving without a license. After posting $250 bail, police released Jones for an August 31 court appearance. (James MacDonald photo)
