Richard     Young, Sr
Richard J. Young, Sr, 78, husband of Esther (Kowalkowski) Young of Evergreen Road, Sandy Hook, died August 21 in West Haven Veterans Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Millinocket, Maine, July 5, 1925, son of the late Thomas and Leona (Theriault) Young.
He attended schools in Maine. He spent two years at the University of Maine. Richard joined the US Navy during World War II, serving as a Machinist Mate 2/CI. He served three years in the Navy, at one time stationed in Okinawa.
Following his discharge he moved to Newtown. For many years he was employed as a heavy equipment operator for local construction companies.
He is survived, besides his wife, by one son, Richard J. Young, Jr, of Cabot, Vt.; and one daughter, Rochelle J. Campanelli of Oxford. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
Military services were held August 26 at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Burial took place in Newtown Village Cemetery.
