Parent Connection Garners

Heavy Community Response

By Larissa Lytwyn

Parent Connection, a newly reformed Newtown-based group dedicated to increasing awareness about drug use and prevention, has, according to parent Dorrie Carolan, received growing interest from across the region.

“Someone came to my house at eight in the morning recently to drop off a Connecticut Post article on Ginger Katz,” she said. Ms Katz, of Norwalk, is the founder of the Courage to Speak Foundation, an institution designed to implement drug education into school curriculum. Ms Carolan hopes to have Ms Katz as a keynote speaker in one of the Connection’s future forums.

Currently, the Group of Hope and Support, a weekly assembly for parents with children suffering from substance abuse, meets Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Newtown Youth Services.

There will be no meeting Monday, September 1.

In addition, a local chapter of Al-Anon/Alateen for families and friends of alcoholics meets Tuesdays from 7 to 8 pm at St Rose Education Center. For more information, contact Ms Carolan at 426-8591 or 426-6424, or Ms DeLuca at 426-9280.
