Danbury Hospital Announces Medical Town Meeting Programs
DANBURY ââ Danbury Hospitalâs popular Medical Town Meeting series will begin its new season in September. The hospital announced a series for 2003â2004 that contains more than a dozen evening lectures to improve community health and wellness.
The series will focus on cancer, childhood obesity, stroke, depression, and new topics such as âDisaster Preparedness for Seniorsâ and will continue to address heart disease as the hospital seeks permission from state regulators to provide more advanced cardiac care to this region.
The meeting topics were selected based on new medical developments and community input at previous Medical Town Meetings, as well as requests made on the hospitalâs website.
âMedical Town Meeting series attendance grows every year,â said Linda Wiseman, director of marketing and public relations. âSome of the meetings include free health screenings and all provide plenty of opportunity for people to ask questions of the speakers.â
The hospital began the community health education program more than 30 years ago. Most meetings are held from 7 to 8:30 pm in the John Creasy Center for Health Education auditorium at the hospital.
âOur health calendar also includes many other special events such as our annual mall health fair in October, childrenâs day in March, and cancer survivors day in June. We plan to follow this announcement with mailings and advertisements containing added detail,â Ms Wiseman said. âBut people can always find our latest information, including Medical Town Meetings and our Partners in Health program on our website, www.danburyhospital.org.â
The calendar includes: September 23, âProstate and Bladder Cancer ââ Beyond the Basicsâ; October 14, âChildhood Obesity: A Growing Epidemicâ; October 21, âAll About Vein Care: New Techniques in the Treatment of Vein Disordersâ; October 28, âBreast Care for a Lifetime: What Every Woman Needs to Knowâ; November 13, âAdvances in the Treatment of Lung Cancerâ; November 18, âOff-The-Cuff: New Insights on High Blood Pressureâ; November 20, âC-O-P-ing With COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)â; December 9, âBe Ready! Disaster Preparedness for Seniors.â
No program is scheduled in January, but starting in February, the following topics are slated to be addressed: February 10, cardiac health; March 9, womenâs health; March 23, colon cancer; April 8, sleep disorders; April 13, diabetes; April 20, bariatric surgery for obesity; May 11, senior health and wellness program; May 18, misconceptions and realities of stroke; May 25; skin cancer and free screening information; and June 1, innovations in treating osteoarthritis of the knee.
