Cooperstown, N.Y. â Olana, the Persian-inspired home designed by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church in Hudson, is the destination for a day trip sponsored by the New York State Historical Association on Saturday, May 14. It is also the inspiration for the exhibit âTreasures from Olana: Landscapes by Frederic Edwin Churchâ on view at the Fenimore Art Museum opening June 12.
The general public and members of NYSHA are invited to explore the sites where Church and other Hudson River School artists painted in the Hudson Valley on a guided tour and have lunch at The Ambrosia Diner in Catskill.
Olana, considered one of the most important artistic residences in the United States, is the last and perhaps greatest masterpiece created by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church. Church developed the estate based on his love for Persian architecture and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Perched on a hilltop in Hudson, Olana provides visitors with spectacular views of the Hudson River and the Catskills, the same views captured by Church in some of the paintings in the exhibit.
The motor coach will depart from The Farmersâ Museum parking lot, Lake Road, at 7:30 am, and return at approximately 5:30 p.m. It will also be picking up and dropping off at the Oneonta Bus Lines Terminal. The cost for members is $65 and for nonmembers, $80. Reservations are required by May 1. Seating is limited; call Carla Eckler at 607-547-1425.
