Colonial Fair Is Returning_To The Hollow

WOODBURY — The Glebe House Museum and Hurd House Museum are pleased to announce that the 8th Annual Colonial Fair and Muster Day will be held the afternoon of September 16. The fair will run from noon to 5 pm.

Like last year, admission will be free. This year Hollow Road will be closed to through traffic during the fair so that the public can stroll along Hollow Road in safety. Parking will be available in Hollow Park, which will be open to the public as usual. For information call the Glebe House at 263-2855 or Old Woodbury Historical Society at 263-2446.

The Glebe House and Hurd House, two organizations with historic house museums on the same street, will offer an introduction to their museums and the town’s rich heritage in a festive setting that evokes the market days and militia training days of the 18th Century in Woodbury.

Old favorites from previous years such as Ellis Limousines stagecoach rides and Paul Peabody’s Old Fashioned Marionette Theater will return to entertain. The Queen’s Rangers, Loyalist re-enactors, will also return and give demonstrations.

James Gregory will present Colonial dancing at the Glebe House and North Star, Woodbury’s acoustic music trio, will perform at the Hurd House. In addition, Tom Hanford will present “Songs and Stories of Old New England” at the Hurd House.

Crafters specialize in early American crafts such as soap making, basketry, spinning, and weaving and making dairy products and will provide demonstrations of techniques and samples of their wares for sale at both houses.

A market square at the Hurd House will create the feeling of Colonial market days with crafts, demonstrations, and information about the Historical Society. Also at the Hurd House, junior docents who have been exploring Colonial life since April will be on hand in costume to explain and demonstrate what they have learned.
