Children ages 7-15 learned early foundational info on creating games, modding, and coding in the “Game Creation & Coding Fundamentals” summer camp taught by Affinity Esports.

Running from Monday, August 19 to Friday, August 23, this camp let children socialize as they learned the basics of coding to create their own games and practiced coding through various challenges and courses in video games such as Roblox and Minecraft Education Edition.

On Tuesday, August 20, campers learned about the importance of loops in game design from Affinity Esports Instructor Justin Morin. Loops are used to repeat and simplify code so that the same command can continue for as long as someone wants without them needing to type it over and over again. Morin shows an example of a loop in the video game Minecraft, where the sun and moon will continuously move through the sky to emulate time passing as people play.
Ava Henriques learns about loops by playing a game in the visual coding language Scratch, which has users drag-and-drop blocks to create code. In this game, people learn how to repeat the same movement command multiple times by attaching a yellow “repeat” block to them.
