Seeing Double
To the Editor:http://chn.ge/2vo4wgr.
The Town of Newtown Highway Department has begun painting double-yellow lines on neighborhood roads, including New Lebbon Road and many others. This is an imminent danger to pedestrians, bikers, and the general wellness of our community. Newtown's narrow roads don't have space for double-yellow lines while allowing 3+ feet for pedestrians/bikers.
Studies show motorists drive faster on double-yellow roads (vs single or nonpainted), cost significant taxpayer money to apply, erodes property value, reduces town revenues, and negatively impacts rural character.
This is a petition for the Police Commission and Highway Department to immediately issue a stay of proceeding for double-yellow line painting on Newtown neighborhood roads. The inconsistency of road line application across Newtown must be addressed by a community task force prior to moving forward.
