Annual Newtown Road Race Is September 5
The 4th Annual Newtown Road Race kicks off at 9 am at Dickinson Park on Saturday, September 5. Race Director Steve Meeker and the rest of the committee anticipate a large field. Last year, nearly 600 people ran in the 5K and another 200 participated in the kidsâ run.
This yearâs prizes for top female and male finishers include framed photographs of the trees painted with the American flag that can be seen when driving along Route 302. The trees, painted by artist David Merrill, serve as the back-drop for this yearâs T-shirt and the photographs were generously donated by Howard Lasher.
The fast, flat scenic course is officially certified by the US Track and Field Association. Registration begins at 7:30 am and pre-registration is available online at newtownroadrace.com or in person at the New Balance store on Stony Hill Road in Bethel. Following the 3.1 mile race, there will be a post-race celebration with announcements, a raffle, and runner awards at the Dickinson Town Park Pavilion. Food and drink will be served before and after the race. The first 800 5K finishers will receive a race goodie bag and a cotton T-shirt.
The Kidâs Fun Run, sponsored by Newtown Prevention Council is open to children of all ages. Cost is $5 per child with a maximum of $10 per family. Registration for the Kidâs Run ends at 10 am and the race begins at 10:15 am. It will include runs of 75 yards, 150 yards and ¼ mile, depending on level and age of the child.
Parents may choose course length the day of the race. Every child will receive a finisherâs medal for participation. There will also be childrenâs activities available and a demonstration presented by Porcoâs Karate Academy of Sandy Hook.
Directions to Dickinson Park, a map of the race course, last yearâs results, parking information, registration and more is online at newtownroadrace.com. All proceeds from the race benefit Newtown Youth and Family Services.
