Police Reports, August 15-25, 2015

DUI Incident

Police report that at about 10:44 pm on August 21, they spotted motorist Omar Silva-Cedillo, 40, of Danbury driving northward on Main Street, after which they saw him cross over the road’s center line on Mt Pleasant Road.

Police said they stopped him at the interaction of Mt Pleasant Road and Blackman Road to investigate.

Police charged Silva-Cedillo with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and driving without a license. Police released him on $640 bail for a September 3 court appearance.

DUI Charge

In a response to a report of suspicious activity at St Rose Cemetery at Cherry Street, police responded to the area about 10:28 pm on August 22 to investigate.

 Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by motorist Lucas Coelho Soares Kaplan, 20, of Ridgefield and charged him with driving under the influence. After arrest processing, police released Kaplan on $250 bail for a September 8 court appearance.

Honda Hits Audi

Police report that at about 11:30 am on Saturday, August 15, an unknown person, who was driving a blue Honda Civic or Honda CRV, backed into the rear bumper of a gray Audi convertible, which was parked unoccupied in the front parking lot near Caraluzzi’s Market at 5 Queen Street.

The Honda driver left the area after the collision occurred, police said. Police ask anyone with knowledge to the incident to contact them at 203 426-5841.

Intersection Crash

About 5:23 pm on August 16, motorist Jeffery Grasso of Ridge Road, who was driving a Toyota RAV-4 SUV southward on The Boulevard, stopped at a stop sign at the southern end of that road and was waiting to make a right turn onto westbound Church Hill Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Michelle Cormier of Torrington was driving a station wagon westward on Church Hill Road, police said.

The Toyota attempted to turn right, but collided with the station wagon, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Grasso a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

Three Vehicles

Motorist Michele Grand, 53, of Newtown, who was driving a 2011 BMW 3-series sedan about 12:35 pm on August 17, stopped for traffic conditions near 87 South Main Street, after which motorist Katherine King, 46, of 121 Huntingtown Road, who was driving a 2010 Subaru Outback station wagon, stopped behind the BMW, police said.

Motorist Amanda Moore, 34, of 42 Appleblossom Lane, who was driving a 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan, then struck the rear end of the Subaru, pushing the Subaru into the rear end of the BMW, police aid.

There were no injuries. Moore received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Alcohol Enforcement

Police report they were conducting an alcohol enforcement project on the evening on August 19, when they spotted Kevin Conte, 18, of Newtown leave Sandy Hook Wine & Liquor at 102 Church Hill Road while carrying a case of beer, which he then placed in a vehicle.

After investigating, police said they issued Conte an infraction for illegal possession of alcohol by a minor.

Additionally, police said they issued package store clerk Nicholas Heron, 21, of Newtown a misdemeanor summons on a charge of sale of alcohol to a minor. Heron is scheduled to appear in court, police said.

In another alcohol enforcement project, on the evening of August 22, police said they conducted surveillance at Bottle Stop Wine & Spirits at 5 Queen Street and saw Jordan Sock, 19, of Newtown buy alcohol there. Police said they issued Sock a misdemeanor summons on a charge of misrepresenting age to buy alcohol and also issued him an infraction for illegal possession of alcohol by a minor.

Also, police said they issued package store clerk Matthew Hoeffel, 21, of Newtown a misdemeanor summons on a charge of sale of alcohol to a minor.

Both Sock and Hoeffel are scheduled to appear in court on the charges, police said.

Warrant

Police report that at about 5 pm on August 21, they stopped motorist David Michael Brown, 36, of Monroe near the intersection of South Main Street and Elm Drive for a handheld cellphone violation, after which they learned that Orange police had an outstanding warrant on him on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court.

Police released Brown on $1,500 bail for a September 3 appearance in Derby Superior Court.

South Main Crash

Police report that while traveling northward near 7 South Main Street at about 5 pm on August 17, a 2007 Subaru Legacy sedan driven by Trane Kessler, 16, of 98 Walnut Tree Hill Road, struck the rear end of a northbound 2004 Honda CRV driven by Lucie Pikora, 22, of 8 Paugussett Road.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Kessler for following too closely. Police said they verbally warned Pikora for driving without a license.

Two Accidents

About 5:16 pm on August 19, motorist Francine Kass, 71, of Brookfield was driving a 2004 Ford Escape SUV northward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Simm Lane, when the Ford was struck from behind by northbound motorist Ruth Beaudry, 72, of Milford, who was driving a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they issued Beaudry a written warning for following too closely.

Shortly after that accident occurred, the Chrysler driven by Beaudry was stopped in the northbound lane when it was struck from behind by northbound motorist Kevin Mooney, 28, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2010 Ford Explorer SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Mooney a written warning for following too closely.

Intersection

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Hattertown Road, Poverty Hollow Road, and Key Rock Road about 7 pm on August 20.

Police said motorist Helen Wilson, 76, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2010 Lincoln MKX SUV did not stop at a stop sign and struck a 2007 Lincoln MKX SUV driven by James Fitzpatrick, 49, of 16 Silver Brook Lane which was traveling in the intersection.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Wilson a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

I-84 DUI

State police report they received a call about 10:20 am on August 19 concerning a vehicle that was parked along the right road shoulder on Interstate 84 near Exit 10 in which its driver was slumped over the steering wheel causing the vehicle’s horn to sound, so they responded to investigate.

State police said they charged motorist Ryan Gurga, 23, of Cheshire with driving under the influence and with driving with a suspended license. Gurga was released on $2,500 bail for a September 14 court appearance.

High Speed

State police said they observed motorist Janay Ruiz, 23, no address given, driving a vehicle 99 miles per hour on westbound Interstate 84 east of Exit 10 about 3:28 am on August 23, so they stopped her to investigate.

Ruiz was arrested on a charge of reckless driving (above 85 mph) and was released on $500 bail for an upcoming arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Highway Crash

Motorist Lisa Almeida, 42, of Southbury, who was driving a 2010 Volvo XC-70 station wagon fast eastward on Interstate 84 near Exit 11 at about 4:51 pm on August 21, approached a 2010 Honda Civic driven by Carissa Kerpen, 25, of Deep River and the Volvo then struck the Honda, state police said.

Kerpen initially reported an injury, but refused medical attention when an ambulance arrived, state police said. Almeida received an infraction for following too closely, according to state police.

Vehicle Onto Median

At about 9 am on August 20, motorist Delaney Devine, 18, of Oxford, who was driving a vehicle westward on Interstate 84 west of Exit 9, drove to the left and entered the highway’s median to avoid striking the vehicle ahead of her during a sudden traffic slow-down, state police said. Devine’s vehicle then struck some guardrailing.

There were no injuries. State police said Devine failed to drive in the established lane.

Information

Police are seeking information from the public as part of their investigation into an auto accident that occurred about 6 pm on August 25 in Hawleyville.

The accident, which involved a black sedan and a gray pickup truck, occurred on Hawleyville Road near its intersection with Mt Pleasant Road.

Police ask any witnesses to the accident to contact investigating Officer Scott Smith at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.
