Ready For The Road Race?

The 5th Annual Newtown Road Race, which is a fundraiser for NYFS, will run on Saturday, September 5.

If you have already registered, pre-registration goodie bags will be available for pick-up at the New Balance store in the Big Y Plaza on Stony Hill Road in Bethel, on Thursday and Friday, September 3-4, from 11 am to 7 pm each day.

If you haven’t yet registered, please visit NewtownRoadRace.com and register online today or print out a registration form and return it to Newtown Youth & Family Services, 17 Church Hill Rd, Newtown CT 06470.

A Few Things To Know: 5K (3.1 miles) and Kids Runs will be offered; runners, walkers and stroller pushers of all ages are welcome to participate; the race will be limited to 1,000 runners; the race start, finish and celebration will take place at Dickinson Park; the fast, flat course is officially sanctioned and certified by the United States Track and Field Association (CT06009JHP); the course runs through Newtown and includes many landmarks of this special town; the Kids Runs will be in 75 yards, 150 yards and quarter-mile, depending on level and age of the child (you can choose the day of the race); and additional Race Day parking will be available in the Taunton Press parking lot, 63 South Main Street (near Elm Drive; police will be on hand to help cross the street).

Race Day schedule is as follows: 7:30-8:45, registration; 9 am, race begins rain or shine; 9:45-11:30 am, post race celebration, raffle and awards; and 10:15, Kids Runs will begin.

Family Programs & Events

*Parent Education Program (PEP): Putting Children First is a State of Connecticut program required as a prerequisite to granting a divorce. Sessions are designed to help families cope with the effects of divorce on children.

 Youth Programs & Activities

*Job Bank: Job Bank is accepting applications from qualified 13-18-year-olds who want employment babysitting, pet sitting or performing other household chores. Call Monday through Friday between 3 and 5 pm for an application.

Support Groups

*Alateen: This program is for youths affected by somebody else’s alcoholism. At meetings, which are Tuesdays at 7 pm, members share their personal experiences, and learn to find personal happiness, whether or not the alcoholic in their life is still drinking.

*Children Of Divorce: This is a special group to help your child heal from the pain caused by a separation or divorce.

A new series for ages 5 to 9 will meet on Thursdays from 5 to 6 pm beginning September 16 and continuing to October 21.

*Circle of Parents: This mutual self-help support program for parents is based on a simple and time tested model: through peer-to-peer leadership and support at weekly meetings, people in a parenting capacity can, over time, gain self-esteem, overcome isolation and improve their parenting skills by exchanging support and positive parenting suggestions.

The group meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7 pm. Contact Jessi at NYFS for details or to register.

*New Hope Community Church Youth Group: The new group is for youths in grades 7-12. Meeting Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm during the school year, the group plays games, eats snacks, hangs out, prays, and seeks to have real conversations about God through group discussion and Bible study.

*New Hope Men’s Group: This group is to help men become the types of husbands, dads and responsible examples to others that they were created to be.

Meetings are Wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm. Contact Jim at 203-770-3745 for details and registration.

*Newtown Parents Advocating for their Children (PAC): This group is for parents of children with learning disabilities. The focus is on assisting parents in finding the resources that they need to help their children become successful.

PAC meets the second Thursday of every month during the school year, from 7 to 9 pm.

*Reclaiming a Sense of Self: This group, facilitated by Thea Schiller, LPC, will be a place to use one’s expressive creative writings as a means to explore one’s dreams and decisions as well as reclaiming a sense of self to combat the stress of daily living.

Participants will read poems, short literary passages and short, short stories. They will have an opportunity to do specific exercises designed to promote meaningful group discussions and individual writings.

Thea Schiller, LPC, CPT, is a licensed professional counselor, published poet and certified poetry therapist.

The group will meet from 9:30 to 11 am on Fridays beginning September 24 at 121 Mt Pleasant Road.

*Sibshop: This program acknowledges that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between.

A new series for ages 5 to 9 will begin meeting Wednesdays from 5 to 6 pm, on September 15, and will continue until October 20.
