Bereavement Support, Empowerment

Series Slated At Griffin

DERBY — The task of working through the loss of a loved one can be difficult to do alone. Being able to share conversation with others who are also grieving is helpful and healing.

Griffin Hospital’s Bereavement Support Group is open to persons who are experiencing the loss of a loved one. The group is facilitated by a member of the Pastoral Care Department and is designed to offer education and an opportunity for shared conversation and support.

The evening group has just begun and will meet Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 pm through December 15.

The afternoon group will meet Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4 pm, September 7 through December 15.

Meetings take place at Griffin Hospital, located at 130 Division Street. There is no charge but due to limited capacity preregistration is required. To enroll, call 203-732-1100.

The first two offerings in the fall/winter Health Empowerment Series at Griffin Hospital have also been announced. The Health Empowerment Series is designed to encourage attendees to be active participants in their health and to educate them on some of the latest treatments and procedures being used at Griffin Hospital.

“Behind the Pain: A Close Look at Hemorrhoids and Fissures” will be presented on Wednesday, September 15, at 6:30 pm, by John M. Aversa, Jr, DO. Dr Aversa is a board-certified colorectal surgeon with offices in Derby.

In this talk he discusses causes, symptoms and treatment of hemorrhoids, fissures and similar ailments and the many forms of treatment including a minimally invasive surgical approach.

“Arthritis and Join Pain” is the topic for Ignatius Komninakas, MD, board certified orthopedic surgeon with expertise in joint replacement surgery and sports medicine. Dr Komninakas will talk about arthritis and the different causes of joint pain and discuss the latest information on surgical and nonsurgical treatment.

Dr Komninakas is affiliated with Valley Orthopaedic Group with offices in Derby, Shelton, and Oxford.
