KATHARINA RICH PERLOW GALLERY MARGOT SPINDELMAN

ak/gs set 8/27 #710292

NEW YORK CITY — The Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery announces an exhibition of Margot Spindelman’s latest series of paintings, “The Ocean and the Road,” opening September 6 with a reception from 5 to 6:30 pm; the show continues through October 4.

Spindelman’s paintings present abstract landscapes that are both visually lavish and socially urgent. The artist uses color, line and form to create a dialogue between a romanticized vision of a place, and the disruptive forces acting upon it. Calm, familiar elements of sky, water and land are interrupted on the canvases by stark bands of color, intruding shapes and looping lines.

The title of the series is derived from Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road, which depicts a post-nuclear, shattered world. Spindelman points out how far her modern, transformed vision of nature has come from the idealized American landscape of the Hudson River School, though her subject matter remains just as seductive.

Spindelman is a 2004 winner of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Paintings. In 2006, she was included in the exhibition “Drawing to Painting” at the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Art Center, and has been included in numerous other group shows around the country. This is her third solo exhibition with the Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery, the Fuller Building, 41 East 57th Street.
